Overview

This dissertation demonstrates that some adherents to postmodernity adversely influence biblically coherent evangelistic strategies within the Emerging, Church movement [ECM]. It focuses upon the evangelistic practices of Tony Jones, Brian McLaren, Dan Kimball, and Mark Driscoll in the movement and analyzes them within the framework of selected biblical evangelistic strategies.

A historical analysis of Modernism and Postmodernism reveals how the perceived deterioration of absolute truth, morality, and a biblical metanarrative lead to an absence of biblically coherent evangelistic practices within the ECM. An examination of the doctrine of soteriology sheds light on the amorphous nature of the movement as the leaders of the ECM struggle to define salvation and explain the nature of the atonement.

The doctrines of sin and hell are evaluated in order to discern a biblical basis for evangelism within the confines of Postmodemism's influence upon the ECM. Chapter five focuses on four selected evangelistic practices and examines how each of the four selected leaders of the ECM utilize and employ the practices compared to evangelicals who practice biblically coherent evangelistic strategies. The final chapter summarizes the findings and provides suggestions for further research.
