Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greta Holt
Mia Vasquez wants to visit Never Land by herself. She does not want to wait for her friends Kate and Lainey to come over. She certainly cannot be expected to take care of little sister Gabby while Mother goes out. Gabby is silly and irritating. When Mother leaves, Mia lets Gabby watch TV so that Mia can make a quick run to Never Land through the loose board in the fence. Papi is working around the other side of the house, so he will not see her leave or come back. In beautiful Never Land, Mia finds the fairy Rosetta and invites her back to play dress up with doll's clothes. All is well until little sister Gabby discovers that Mia and Rosetta are having fun without her. A terrible sister fight ensues, someone runs away, and Papi fixes the board in the fence. The portal to Never Land is closed, trapping girls and fairies on either side. In the third of the "Never Girls" series, Thorpe writes an adventurous but comfortable story for girls to read. Parents are good, if unaware of magic; fairies and Clumsies interact, helping and teaching each other; a lonely neighbor is given a lift; and the girls are realistic friends. Thorpe seamlessly weaves magic into the framework, and Christy provides a map of Never Land. As if that were not enough, the lovely book cover has sparkles on it. Reviewer: Greta Holt
