Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Four short chapters provide basic information about doctors. Doctors help to keep people healthy and they help people get better when they are sick. Doctors who care for children are called pediatricians. Healthy people should see a doctor once a year for a checkup. The doctor will listen to the patient's heart and lungs and take her blood pressure. He/she will also discuss healthy habits. Sometimes doctors give shots to keep people from getting sick. They use thermometers, tongue depressors, and otoscopes to check different body parts. Sometimes people must go to a hospital in an ambulance. An emergency room doctor will fix a broken bone or stitch a cut. Surgeons perform operations and keep patients in hospitals until they are all better. Colorful photographs depict both children and doctors from a variety of cultural backgrounds in actual medical situations. A "Be a Community Helper!" page presents suggestions for staying healthy. Four "Words You Know" include pictures and labels. Includes an index and a website to consult for more information. A good introduction to doctors for young children. Part of the "Rookie Read-About Community" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
