Editorial Reviews

Booknews
MacDonald (health, Brunel U., UK) wrote a 1996 book about Cuban education during the same time period (since the overthrow of Batista); the present work can stand alone for a public health readership or as a companion to the earlier book for those interested in studies of Cuba and of socialism in general. The author considers the Cuban health care system in the context of Cuban socialism, third world economics, and the American trade embargo, documenting its many achievements and some of its shortcomings. He draws on WHO statistics as well as extensive personal interviews of providers and consumers. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
