Overview

The prog-metal titans' 11th studio album is the follow-up to 2009's Black Clouds & Silver Linings and is the first to feature new drummer Mike Mangini (Extreme, Steve Vai) following the shock departure in 2010 of founding member Mike Portnoy. Produced by guitarist John Petrucci, it sees the band's epic songwriting in full swing and arguably even more symphonic and grandiose than ever before.

I agree, Mike Portnoy's departure was crushing and Mangini's is not as good. However, Mangini is still a pretty damn good drummer! This album is brilliant from beginning to end and definitely shows that Dream Theater is ready to persevere and move on. I can't get enough of "On the Backs of Angels" or "Bridges in the Sky." Just give it a try! The bottom line is that the band has moved on and gave Mangini a chance, so why can't you? (Also, should you really listen to reviews comprised of a single, long, run-on sentence?) Dream Theater: Still Going Strong 1985-Present

I really enjoyed this album. Mike Mangini was chosen by the guys to replace Mike Portnoy after he left the band and I think he does a great job. Don't listen to the one star reviews of this album; its pretty good. Breaking All Illusions and On the Backs of Angels are all time DT greats.

FIRST OF ALL, A BRIEF HISTORY LESSON ON MIKE MANGINI..HE IS IN THE GUINESS WORLD BOOK OF RECORDS FOR THE MOST DRUM BEATS PER MINUTE, THEN WE CAN STOP THE COMPARISON TO MIKE PORTNOY, THEIR STYLES ARE NOT SIMILAR, BOTH ARE EXCELLENT DRUMMERS..PORTNOY WAS A BETTER FIT WITH DREAM THEATER, HIS DRUMMING STYLE IS UNIQUE & FLASHY WHERE MANGINI JUST POUNDS A STEADY BEAT MORE SUITABLE FOR OTHER STYLES & NOT SO MUCH PROGRESSIVE METAL, IT SHOULD ALSO BE KNOWN THAT MANGINI HAS PLAYED SESSION DRUMS ON MANY A RECORD, SOME THAT MOST PEOPLE DO NOT EVEN KNOW....BOTTOM LINE....IT'S LIKE REPLACING A ROLLS ROYCE WITH A BENTLEY...........

after mike portnoy left dream theater this band is now going straught downhill the new guy cant fill mikes shoes and his drum beats are annoying and lame the other members shine but the new guy does not this album is by far dream theaters weakest album and weakest songs and the the drummer trys to tear the band apart with his drumming style wheres mike portnoy when you need him the most im no longer a fan of dream theater due to this new album and new drummer mike portnoy surely will be missed may dream threater rest in peace 1989-2010
