Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Emily Griffin
The fairies of Fairyland are thrilled it is fall because that means Halloween fun. As they rake leaves, the girls discuss the annual Halloween costume ball the King and Queen of Fairyland throw. They spend time together planning their costumes. Sophie suggests that they wear costumes that match the color of their jewels. Flora uses her wand to make accessories appear! All the fairies decide on their costumes, except for Amy. She can't decide what to be. Trixie asks her, "Do you want to look fancy? Silly? Scary?" Amy doesn't know. On Halloween night, the fairies head out to the Fairyland Palace, but without Amy—who has disappeared. Their walk takes them through the enchanted forest. A low moaning echoes through the trees and spooks the girls. When they arrive at the palace, the Queen asks where Amy is. Everyone hears the low moan again. Then a "burst of purple sparkles appears." It's a ghost! But the Jewel Fairies shriek with delighted surprise—they know that voice! Now that the gang is all together, they join in the ball's fun activities: bobbing for apples, eating pumpkin cupcakes, and dancing to the "Monster Mash." This level 2 addition to the "Scholastic Reader" series is geared to developing readers. This title, which has a 626-word count, has predominately long sentences and a fair amount of dialogue. Fans of the "Rainbow Magic" fairies will enjoy reading about these themed characters—and not just at Halloween. Reviewer: Emily Griffin
