Editorial Reviews

Lori Smith
Holidays are a good time for little ones to ask questions about what we believe—and why other families believe and celebrate differently. Laura Buller's A Faith Like Mine tells the stories of faiths around the world through the eyes of children&#8230Each section covers symbols, rites of passage, holidays and special events, brought to life with dozens of compelling pictures.
—The Washington Post
Publishers Weekly
Employing the crisp design for which DK is known, Buller offers a concise and kid-friendly overview of various religions, bolstered by the comments and observations of children from around the globe. Hannah from Ghana describes how her parents sometimes speak in tongues at Pentecostal Christian Sunday services in her home country. Yael, from Israel, likes to say the Shema at her Orthodox synagogue each Saturday. And Sheetal, a nine-year-old Sikh girl from the U.K., celebrates the spring festival of Baisakhi. After providing a general introduction to the concepts of faith and religion, Buller explores the traditions, geographic location, symbols, holy books, festivals, rites of passage and other elements of the world's six major recognized religions as well as other faiths (including Baha'i, Taoism and Jainism). Each spread features top-quality color photos of religious items and practices alongside their brief descriptions. Personal reflections from various children-whose photos are also featured-make this an uplifting and appealing volume likely to invite both further exploration and understanding. Ages 5-8. (Sept.) Children's Literature
This large and beautifully presented reference introduces many of the world's religions by exploring the history, observances, and beliefs of each tradition. The voices of children from around the world are used to give readers an "insiders view" of religious practices. The book opens with a brief attempt to define or understand "faith" and a world map showing areas of religious concentration. The vast and varied subject of "traditional beliefs" merits only a two-page spread. Some religions are given an average of ten pages, while several at the end of the book, including Shinto and Baha'I are given a page each. The longer chapters are detailed and packed full of information and images, perhaps sometimes a bit too much. The section about Islam, for example, quickly examines the role of the written word, places of pilgrimage, rites of passage, worship, and festivals before explaining the Five Pillars from the perspective of a nine year old boy from Morocco and the Qur'an from the perspective of a girl named Ines in France. Overall a good book which should spark interest in and discussions about religions around the world. 2005, Dorling Kindersley, Ages 8 to 12.

School Library Journal
Gr 4-8-Buller introduces Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, and Sikhism through the eyes of children. What constitutes faith and tradition is briefly explained and a world map indicates the main religion in each country. Following a thumbnail sketch of each religion, the text looks at its origin, founder, and practices. Sidebars include a brief discussion of a religious symbol, the holy book, rites of passage, a map and chart indicating the number of practitioners and where they live, and a list of the main festivals. On the next spread, children of the faith discuss what they hope to be or do, and, particularly, what they like about their religion. They discuss their beliefs, ceremonies, and practices. The concluding chapter looks at five additional faiths. Overall, the amount of information is adequate and straightforward and focuses on aspects of the religion that would appeal to children. The clear, vibrant photographs are especially inviting. For more specific details, try Jennifer Glossop's The Kids Book of World Religions (Kids Can, 2003) or Mary Pope Osborne's One World, Many Religions: The Way We Worship (Knopf, 1996).-Margaret R.
