Faith That Transforms Us: Reflections on the Creedby Donald Wuerl
The truths of our faith are more than wordsthey are living truths that are meant to make a difference in our lives. Every single revelation of God can be life-changing and transforming when we understand it, live it out, and share it with others. This book by Cardinal Donald Wuerl is a positive, uplifting, and joyful presentation of the basic truths of the Catholic faith. With its simple and clear format, it will help Catholics recognize the abundant life awaiting them when they embrace these truths. Each chapter examines a section of the Creed through the series of questions: (1) What is the revelation, and what does it mean? (2) How can this truth transform me? (3) How do I live it? (4) How do I share it with others? Each chapter ends with discussion questions and a “Looking for More” section with citations to the Scriptures, the Catechism, and relevant Church documents.

I started to read this book thinking it would be a technical discussion of theology that would address the mind rather than the heart . But I was proved wrong right from the beginning of the introduction where the author said that the creed is more than words or boxes we must check but instead is “living truths meant to make a difference in our lives”. The book does address the meaning and implications of the ancient Nicene Creed as well as how the Catholic Church understands and teaches it. But it also challenges and shows ways to live those beliefs in our everyday lives. It quickly became apparent that Cardinal Wuerl not only wanted to have a general goal of writing about both content and application, but forced himself to consistently do it to the end by committing to a structure in every chapter of describing the revelation, meaning and potential to change us, along with suggestions on living it out and hints on how to share it with others. Each chapter also includes questions for group discussion. And by using this same structure for each clause of the creed, not only is there a guaranteed focus on applying the truths to our lives, but it allows each section to stand alone as a smaller meditation or even material for a “mini-retreat”. I was encouraged while reading this book and I can see the benefit of keeping it on hand to use, whenever needed, to refresh my personal beliefs and help me better live my life for Christ while looking for opportunities to share this good news with others.
