A Few Beersby Robert Johnson
Americans spend almost 72 billion dollars per year on alcohol. We are a nation of alcoholics. Three quarters of Americans drink, but only about 5-7% admit to a problem with alcohol. Crime statistics alone say otherwise, but even they are unreliable and vary as much as 100% depending on what sources are cited. Alcoholics abound in our government, law enforcement, the armed services, hospitals, and churches. The author is one of them.
Robert Johnson's personal story is not particularly important, though you will find it interesting and informative. What Johnson trusts you will find important is the reason why people are alcoholic and the solution to the problem.
Many groups would have us believe that alcoholism is a spiritual malady that afflicts morally defective people. This view is false and misleading. Worse, it demands wrong conclusions about how to solve the problem. Alcoholism is not only an epidemic here, it is a pandemic across the globe claiming millions of lives every year. Every problem drinker has a choice: he can be part of the problem or part of the solution.
