Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara B. Disckind
This "Read and Wonder" book uses large pencil-and-watercolor pictures to highlight the text, the tone of which is set by the rather wistful statement, "There's nothing I'd rather do than just sit and look at horses." Along with the paintings, hand-lettered notes on some pages highlight horse behavior, biology, and care. Details on what horses eat, how they sleep, the sounds they make, the way they smell, how they move, and their anatomy will delight those who dream of and love these wonderful animals. The text and illustrations depict horses as individuals, both in appearance and in personality, a thoughtful touch for young readers.

Selected by the National Council of Teachers of English as an outstanding book, this addition to the "Read, Listen & Wonder" series uses large pencil-and-watercolor pictures to highlight the text, the tone of which is set by the rather wistful statement, "There's nothing I'd rather do than just sit and look at horses." Along with the paintings, hand-lettered notes on some pages highlight horse behavior, biology and care. Details about what horses eat, how they sleep, the sounds they make, the way they smell, how they move and their anatomy will delight those who dream of and love these wonderful animals. The text and illustrations depict horses as individuals, both in appearance and in personality, a thoughtful touch for young readers. The story is read by Alan Marriott and then additional facts are provided about frogs. The third and final track has the book being read again with music to assist young readers with the page turns. Children's Literature - Beverly Kobrin
Mr. Lilly's exquisite colored pencil/watercolors enrich a simply written book with parallel texts. One, set in serif type, is the narrator's description of what s/he sees while perched atop a fence; the other, in sans serif type, identifies the parts of the horse's body, and other unique characteristics.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-An attractive but bland nonfiction entry. A first-person narration gives a simple introduction to horse behavior, gaits, anatomy, and coloring. Additional tidbits of information appear on some pages in smaller type. Children will enjoy Lilly's lovely watercolors, but even the youngest will want to know more about these majestic creatures than is presented here.-Louise L. Sherman, Anna C. Scott School, Leonia, NJ
Julie Corsaro
With its simple text and pencil-and-watercolor illustrations set against ample white space, this is the horse book librarians have been looking for. The first-person narrative is lyrical and immediate, presenting the behavior, appearance, anatomy, offspring, and movements of a wide variety of breeds. Shown in a natural setting within the body of the text, the animals are pictured in neat rows on the endpapers. While Lilly's attractive drawings have simple forms (his usual detailing is absent), his renderings are solid and anatomically correct, with black outlines that invite tracing. As in other entries in the lauded Read and Wonder series, the numerous captions provide additional information; here, it's about food, grooming, and gender. No horsefeathers, this is a surefire bet for young equestrians.
