School Library Journal - School Library Journal
K-Gr 3 Amply illustrated with detailed black-and-white sketches, this book introduces beginning readers to the marsupials of Australia. Scientific terminology is carefully defined and accompanied by a pronunciation guide. The text and illustrations work together to develop and challenge children's powers of observation. For example, in the section on marsupial mice, the text states that different types of mice may be distinguised from one another by examining the tails. The accompanying illustration depicts two different species of marsupial mice. Readers are then asked to study the drawings and identify the ``fat-tailed mouse'' and the ``brush-tailed mouse.'' Marvelous Mammals: Monotremes and Marsupials (Prentice-Hall, 1964; o.p.) by Bernice Kohn is similar in scope but is intended for older readers. The clearly written text, complemented by uncluttered illustrations, makes Selsam's book a valuable addition to basic science collections. Barbara B.
