Editorial Reviews

Horn Book
The fertile imagination and laconic style that Sachar employed to great affect in Holes work equally well for this latest volume in an often-brilliant series...Clipped sentences and short paragraphs are not only just right for new readers, they're just right for the story—-a smart, funny twist on the new-kid theme...

My wife bought this book by Louis Sachar, who won a Newbery Medal and the National Book Award for his novel Holes, from the Children's Book of the Month Club. There are actually five previous Marvin Redpost books and A Flying Birthday Cake? is number six in the series, but it is the only one that I have read. The book opens with nine-year old Marvin sleeping out in the yard at a friend's house for a birthday party. However, he can't sleep because he's eaten too much cake and had too much punch and the ground is hard. Suddenly the earth starts to shake. He hears a humming noise, and something zooms across the sky in a bright flash. It's green, like the frosting on Nick's birthday cake, and it glows like it has candles. Is it a flying birthday cake, or something else? The rest of the book is about a new kid in Marvin's school named "Joe Normal" whom Marvin befriends but is somewhat "different" from all the other kids. The implication is left that "Joe" is really the son of aliens from outer space who have come to earth to confer with the President of the United States. The book is supposed to exhibit "a rare honesty about what children really encounter in the world," but, while I did not really see anything particularly objectionable in it, I found it rather stupid.
