Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Written in the Dick and Jane style, this rather lengthy early reader tells the story of a young boy and his pet dragon who watch a moving van arrive in the neighborhood. Interestingly, the title does not really match the story; it is the young boy who makes a new friend, and he is much more the focus of the story than his pet dragon. The kid who moves in just happens to be a girl, and an African-American one. It is just too much to believe that this boy would be excited about a girl as a potential playmate/friend. Furthermore, she has her own pet—a unicorn. The story is unbelievable, the art is unappealing, and the boy looks much too old to be the star of an early reader. While the focus of the book is to teach reading skills using limited vocabulary, reinforcement, and phonics awareness, I think kids also deserve a good story with better art.
