Children's Literature - Sylvia Firth
A boy named Jay begins his diary about a leopard frog in April and ends his notes in December. These observations are recorded on the left pages of the book, appearing as if they are actually entered into a notebook. Wonderfully clear and vibrant photos precisely illustrate the text. Additional facts provide more information, such as what tadpoles and frogs eat, how they avoid enemies, and how long leopard frogs live. Readers are also given simple tasks to perform. These include measuring and comparing a froglet with an adult frog, as well as locating a frog hiding among plants. A page entitled "Science Lab" presents a challenge to readers to draw a chart that portrays the lifecycle of the frog. To provide definitions that are easily understood, unfamiliar terms are combined with photos in the glossary. An index, a bibliography and the address of a publisher's website are also included. Curious youngsters and early elementary teachers are sure to find this volume informative and useful. If other titles in the "Science Slam: Animal Diaries: Life Cycles" series are in the collection and are in demand, then this title is a good choice for purchase. Reviewer: Sylvia Firth
