Overview

Every ugly duckling is a swan in waiting...

Emma Frazier is smart, hardworking, and loves her job as a journalist for a Florida lifestyle magazine. Emma knows she’s no great beauty, but she’s pretty certain she has a shot with her handsome new boss, Ben Gallagher—until Emma overhears a mutual acquaintance refer to her as the “ugly friend.” In an effort to reclaim her battered self-esteem, Emma decides to impress Ben at work by promising an exclusive interview with NASCAR legend, Trip Monroe.

Emma and Trip went to high school together and although it’s been fourteen years since they’ve spoken, Emma is certain she can score an interview with the elusive super star. But connecting with Trip turns out to be harder than Emma imagined. Her quest for the interview leads her back to her tiny hometown of Catfish Cove, where old secrets and a new romantic interest shake up Emma’s views on life and teach her that maybe the key to finding true love is as simple as accepting yourself for the person you were always meant to be.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
A journalist working for a Florida lifestyle magazine, Emma Frazier has a major crush on her boss, Ben Gallagher. When Ben joins Emma and her friends for a night of drinks, Emma has hopes that their relationship can become something more. But Ben's mixed signals and the fact that he leaves with the woman who designated Emma the "ugly friend" in their group sends Emma's confidence plummeting. What's a girl to do? In Emma's case she makes a promise that may be impossible to keep. She needs to get an exclusive interview with a reclusive NASCAR driver, Trip Monroe, for the magazine. Emma is counting on the fact that she and Trip went to high school together. Surely he'll talk to her even though he has never been forthcoming with other reporters. And if she delivers, then Ben will be sure to take notice. What she doesn't expect is a relationship that comes out of nowhere. VERDICT The publisher's blurb for Geraci's latest (after The Boyfriend of the Month Club) promises "humor, entertaining, sympathetic characters and a heartwarming romance," and it delivers for the most part. This will appeal to fans of Katie Fforde and Mary Kay Andrews.—Jane Jorgenson, Madison P.L., WI

Emma Frazier works for Florida!, a lifestyle magazine.  She has a crush on her boss, Ben Gallagher.  When she is out at a local bar someone refers to her as the “ugly friend.”  At that point she decides she can impress her boss and co-workers by getting the interview of a life time with Nascar driver, Trip Monroe.
The only problem is Trip does not do interviews.  Emma hopes she can lay the we went to school together card and get the coveted interview.  Starting by going back to their hometown, Catfish Cove, where she learns of secrets and meets another classmate and a romance starts.  Will Emma get her interview?  Can she overcome the “ugly friend” comment?

A Girl Like You is witty and fun.  From the very beginning I was sucked right in and read the whole book in almost one sitting.  I really liked that Emma referred to her moms throughout the book and it was dealt with, but not made a HUGE deal.  Usually I don’t enjoy the first person point of view, liking to know all the characters in the story, but this time it was great.   Emma told her story and kept it all real.

Emma is so lovable.  She is real.  She is a normal size, with normal friends, and normal insecurities.  Her crush on her boss, who leads her on without starting a relationship, makes me chuckle.  I feel like Emma truly knows herself.  She knows deep down that she is not that “ugly friend”, but sometimes hearing it you just have to work through it.   As she works through it she discovers more and more about herself and makes herself stronger  and more self esteemed.

I kept thinking I knew how this would end, but was very pleasantly surprised with how the story actually ended.  If you are looking for an easy fun read check this out.

    Fun and familiar

This book had all the elements of being a great book. I found myself laughing out loud and at time tearing up. Emma is easy to relate to and Richard is a coworker we all probably have. I absoutely recommend this book.

    Delightful Story!
Maria Geraci has a talent for writing fun, lighthearted books that you just can't put down, and this one is no exception. I really loved Emma, the main character. Her daily struggles were very relatable, and the men she had in her life were interesting. I was kept guessing as to what would happen in the romance department but, most of all, I wanted to see how Emma would learn to embrace her strengths. A delightful, truly enjoyable novel!

A Book Like This is Perfect for A Girl Like You

Stories that blend friendship and romance are among my favorites. Author Maria Geraci’s newest novel, A GIRL LIKE YOU, certainly delivers on that score. The characters are relatable, intriguing and funny, Geraci’s exploration of the ugly duckling syndrome that almost everyone experiences poignant and uplifting. She also peppers the plot with real-life situations, seamlessly integrating Emma’s two moms into the story. In doing so, she reveals caring parents, cleverly not casting them as a social statement. Readers will be rooting for Emma and wondering about her array of friends who bring layer of substance to this often humorous women’s fiction novel. On the romance side, Geraci keeps you guessing, investing, as Emma does, in the possible suitors and whether they’ll survive the litmus test of romantic longevity. I did not see the ending coming, as I suspect few readers will. A GIRL LIKE YOU will entertain and surprise readers, making this effort by Geraci an excellent read.

A Lilac Wolf and Stuff Review

Well written, well edited, and even the cover looks professional. It pops and catches your eye. I had a real hard time not picking this up as soon as it arrived. Once I did, I couldn't put it down. I have lost sleep, and ignored the breakfast dishes...well all my housekeeping really. lol

All the characters are intriguing. You want to know more about all of them. But this is from Emma's perspective so you really only know a lot about her. The author does a good job keeping that consistent.

It's an awkward story, Emma is not the normal female lead. She was raised by 2 moms and no dad. Add to that it was in a small town, and she's not a size 0. In the beginning she overhears an acquaintance tell her best friend that Emma is "the ugly friend" which really triggers all her low self-esteem issues. I can relate to that.

Also Emma likes to go to the beach and read, she enjoys going out but also savors her nights in. I feel like Emma is like me only she got her poop together and got that journalism degree.

It's also not a normal romance book. She's in love with her boss, but he leaves with that skank who made the "ugly friend" comment. She dates a guy from her home town. She's kind of here and there and you really don't know who she is going to end up with. There are hints, but they are deliciously subtle. And that's where my review ends, because you will have to find out for yourself what happens to Emma.
