Meet the Author

Marianne L.M. Cramer Vos had a fairy-tale childhood, living in a flower laden garden in a fashionable Berlin suburb surrounded by fir woods and 2 sets of Italianate walls. She learned horseback riding, foreign languages, piano playing, and composed poetry. But during her teen years WWII exploded this idyllic life, robbed her of her father, four first cousins, several schoolmates, 2 boyfriends, dear neighbors and tenants, and all peace & security. She was lucky to survive with her mother and later come to America, where she belatedly pursued careers ranging from steno temp to University Professor and recognized scholar.

Dr. Vos’ students kept grilling her about her fate during the Battle of Berlin, her knowledge of the Jewish question, how to survive bomb attacks, the onslaught of the Red Army, the collapse of houses, family, all infrastructures. ..and how it felt to starve for years on end. So in 2001 she gave several interviews and began to write them down. Rudely interrupted by the 9/11/01 attack, during which time she was touring Greece, the cradle of Western civilization, she decided to conclude her volume, largely written from the standpoint of a 17 year old and plans to prepare a second one highlighting her stay at the Free University of West Berlin and the adventure of her emigration.
