Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Grandma and Grandpa get in on the act in A Grand Celebration: Grandparents in Poetry, ed. by Carol G. Hittleman and Daniel R. Hittleman, illus. by Kay Life. Thoughtful quotes are sprinkled alongside the 26 poems by Lucille Clifton, Donald Graves, Myra Cohn Livingston and others. Despite what the cover might indicate, the interior illustrations reflect ethnic diversity. (Apr.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-Twenty-six poems pay tribute to grandparents, many by well-known, popular poets such as Jack Prelutsky, Nikki Grimes, Lucille Clifton, Lee Bennett Hopkins, Myra Cohn Livingston, Arnold Adoff, and others. Some are childlike in tone; others are adult reflections and memories. Although the selections portray the vitality and endurance of the older generation, as well as the special relationships between grandparent and child, the illustrations do not do the words justice. They lapse into sentimentality, depicting angelically smiling children, recalling greeting-card art in their unrealistically sweet portrayals. This is unfortunate, as the poems, most of which can be found in other collections, are good.-Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
