Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - C. Alicia Clelland
This book is one in a series of six books that Jinny Johnson has written about insects. His stories are written from the insects' point-of-view. The book includes many scientifically accurate and interesting facts about grasshoppers. Johnson does an excellent job in portraying the grasshopper's life cycle. Sanzi's illustrations are also scientifically accurate and enhance the reader's knowledge of a grasshopper's life. Every detail of a grasshopper's body and its life stages are minutely displayed in Sanzi's drawings. Teachers and parents will find this book to be a good addition for a unit on insects. This book also provides an early model to a book's format as it includes a table of contents and an index. In addition, the format uses a glossary for vocabulary, large font print, and illustrations that match the text, all enabling an emergent reader an opportunity to successfully read this book (some adult support may be necessary for some of the more challenging scientific terms). Teachers will also appreciate that key facts are highlighted and that the author ends with a section "more about grasshoppers" which includes interesting facts and extends a student's knowledge. This book makes an excellent addition to any primary classroom library. Reviewer: C. Alicia Clelland
