A little bit about me, the author

My family is my biggest achievement and I am very happily married to my beautiful wife Rachael and we have two young children. I am a published author with six published books and run my own publishing company specialising in Kindle Publishing. I also run a consultancy business and a cake decorating business specialising in very unique novelty, specialist, bespoke designs. I have written blogs and articles in various sectors, including psychology, marketing, sales, business development, recruiting, and cake decorating. I also love to draw and make cartoon characters and enjoy role playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons. It has always been important for me to have a variety of interests and my passion for research and learning new skills has enabled me to write about many topics.

I love writing and always have done. As a child I would make up characters and give them scenarios to interact with each other in. At the time I didn’t realise what I was doing, but it was this kind of imaginative play that I still use today when writing or designing characters for stories or games. My passion for writing was rekindled when I reached my early thirties and my children were born. Seeing them explore and play, reminded me of how I used to have a very vivid imagination and I wanted it back! I rediscovered great books that I loved as a child such ‘Mrs Frisby and The Rats of Nymph’, The Hobbit, anything by Roald Dahl and the amazing poems of Edward Lear. This rediscovery set me on the path I am on today.

Since then I have spent a lot of time researching character creation and have looked at how authors approach it. It has been an exciting discovery process for me and I have been able to learn from some of the best authors in the world. The main thing I have realised is that every writer is different. Every writer will approach character creation in their own way and it is very personalised and often instinctual. The good news is that there are a set of basic tools, guidelines and foundations that you can learn in order to develop your own style and method, which will allow you to create memorable, exciting and intriguing characters of your own. Having a great plot or story is essential, but it is the characters that will live on in the memory of your readers.
