The gold rush-era town of Virginia City was once Montana's territorial capital and the center of trade for Alder Gulch, home to the richest placer mines in the world. But Virginia City became a town almost frozen in time once gold deposits played out and Helena became the state capital in 1889. Recently purchased by the State of Montana to preserve for posterity, Virginia City today attracts visitors from all over the world, who marvel at its intact architecture. Former associate editor of Montana The Magazine of Western History, Marilyn Grant first explored Virginia City during childhood visits to her grandmother's home in Bozeman, Montana. Now retired, she lives in Helena, where she continues to write, edit, and explore the state.
