Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sarah Maury Swan
Want to learn how to draw spooky, but fun, Halloween decorations? This is the book for you. After of a brief introduction telling the reader what supplies to have on hand, the author and illustrator show us how to draw a five-eyed spider in her web. Very simple to do, it turns out. A large oval and a small oval for the body and head, plus five circles on the head for eyes is all it takes. Then you add eight squiggly lines for legs and you have the outline of a spider. If you follow the guidelines and look at the final figure, you'll soon have your own spider. But do not be spooked about adding your own details. The book also has directions on how to draw a jack-o-lantern and a bat and a cat and a monster and a vampire. The last two figures are a witch on her broom and a dancing skeleton. Bet you can use the new skills to also draw decorations for other holidays! Santa Claus for Christmas or menorah candlestick for Chanukkah or hearts for Valentine's Day are good decorations to start with. Reviewer: Sarah Maury Swan

Meet the Author

Jennifer Besel has the best job in the world—writing and editing books for kids! Her book The Captivating, Creative, Unusual History of Comic Books was a 2011 notable book from the National Council for the Social Studies, the Children's Book Council, and the TriState Young Adult Review Committee. It was also a 2010 VOYA honor book. Jen reads, writes, and plays in Mankato, Minnesota, with her husband and two sons.

Lucy Makuc lives, works, and plays in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She has always loved drawing as a means of expression and communication. She studied at the National College of Art and under several teachers. When she’s not illustrating, she enjoys listening to music, reading comics, and playing with her cats.
