I am 56. I found this album disappointing because the entire soundtrack isn't on this CD. They have left off some songs so they could add more Beatles songs. This is cool and all, but I wanted to hear the entire soundtrack. At my age, it's obvious I saw the movie when it first was released. I have memories connected to all the songs in the film. I miss Ringo's Theme especially.

This is the soundtrack featuring many of the fours most famous records. First their was Please Please Me, then their was With The Beatles and now comes this rocking companion to the film. John, Paul, George and Ringo have done it again. The year was 1964 and all of the kids were tapping their toes to the music of lads from Liverpool. As Ringo said, "I'm a Mocker." Brilliant!

With this album, the Beatles created their first near masterpiece. A Hard Days Night marked the first time the band would record an album of entirely original material. They would not attempt the same again until Rubber Soul in 1965. Though this album is marketed as the soundtrack to the film of the same name it transcends the whole genre of the soundtrack album by adding seven Lennon-McCartney originals to the seven selections written and recorded for the soundtrack. This makes the British version of this LP far superior to the American version which was a soundtrack in the true sense of the word. This also makes the British version of A Hard Day's Night far superior to the British version of Help! The non-soundtrack songs on A Hard Day's Night nicely complement the soundtrack songs causing the record to be far more than the sum of its parts. The non-soundtrack songs on Help!, in marked contrast, do not complement the soundtrack songs as nicely and so, for the most part, sound like filler. A Hard Days Night shows definite growth in the music and in the songwriting skills of Lennon and McCartney. McCartney especially comes into his own on this record. "And I Love Her" is a beautiful love song that betrays a maturity far in adavance of his age at the time (22). "Things We Said Today" sounds at least six years ahead of its time and so serves as an adumbration of the direction his career would take after he left the band. Lennon's contributions, especially the title song and "You Can't Do That," showcases the composer's fun side which would inceasingly become subdued while "I'll Cry Instead" and "I'll Be Back" demonstrate the darker, more somber, turn his songwriting would take with subsequent albums. As a whole this record is a worthy addition to your Beatles' collection and serves as the first textbook example of the power pop sound that the Fab Four both invented and perfected.

When faced with having to pick a favorite Beatles album, most fans think of 'Revolver', 'Abbey Road', 'Sgt Pepper's', 'Rubber Soul' or 'the White Album' as top choices. All are excellent albums, all of which contain some of the best songs ever written and recorded. But for whatever reason, 'A Hard Day's Night' gets overlooked when considering the best Beatles album. Sure, it was recorded in 1964, during the height of Beatlemania, before the maturity and development that led to the aforementioned five classic albums. But song for song, 'A Hard Day's Night' quite arguably may be the most consistently even, and if you will, perfect album they ever recorded. All thirteen tracks are Lennon/McCartney penned compositions, there is no 'obligatory Ringo-sung song', and George Harrison does turn up, but singing a Lennon/McCartney composition. In the interest of fair play and democracy, Ringo was alloted a song an album either written by Lennon/McCartney or a cover tune. More often than not, much as we all love Ringo and how important he was to the group, tracks such as "What Goes On", "Don't Pass Me By" and "Act Naturally" aren't of the calibre and strength most Lennon/McCartney songs show. As for Harrison, by the time of 'A Hard Day's Night', he had contributed only one song to the Beatles' catalog and was still developing his own songwriting style, which greatly improved by 'Revolver'. So with that, 'A Hard Day's Night' makes for the most perfectly consistent Beatles album, if not necessarily the best album (my personal pick would be 'Revolver' having to choose one).

I have to agree with that other 15 year old fan (not because I'm also 15, though I am), that any good Beatles lover knows you just cannot choose amongst the wide array of styles they made-I mean, come on, they shaped American Rock! If you ask a fan what their favorite song is, the favorite response goes, "well all of them, of course!" But I think this album rocks-ha- because these songs are so great! I love "Happy Just To Dance With You"(it's on my signature at the end of my e-mail, and "If I Fell" and the title song and-mostly all of them. The last one is not my favorite, but the cd as a whole is great. The songs fit in with thre movie of the same name, so it might make sense if ya see that too. All in all? A great new cd to add to that collection of yours! i love them so much! I have a shirt, the nthology, the cds and i want to the pic of them on time mags cover. if ppl. say i hate them, i follow them around with my shirt.

"I Should Have Known Better", "And I Love Her","If I Fell",and "Can't Buy Me Love" are my favorites but any true Beatles fan you knows you can't pick just one! A great album missing only one thing, a song sung by Ringo! (My favorite Beatle!)

This is the prime specimen of early Beatles music. This is one of my favorite early Beatle albums. I love the movie too. There isn't a song on this album that I don't like. I absolutely love the vocals in and the passionate lyrics "If I Fell" and "I Love Her" and John's harmonica in "I Should Have Known Better". The work turned out by John and Paul is great. The great Lennon-McCartney duo really showed their true colors in this album. I feel that it is best written album of them all, as some of their best loved hits came out of the work of "A Hard Days Night". This album comes with my highest recommendations.

The Beatles were the geniuses of Rock, and nowhere is that genius more starkly obvious than in this 1964 album. Here we have one amazingly brilliant, infectious, jaw-dropping song after another! In all of Rock music, you will not hear better song writing! This album is pure and utter magic from start to finish. It is one of the very few I would call PERFECT. Just listen to those chord changes on the bridge of ¿I Should Have Known Better¿ and how John brilliantly set the melody against them. Mystery, melancholy, passion, euphoria¿it¿s all there. How about the incredibly gorgeous ¿If I Fell¿? Think that¿s a simple tune? Follow the chords; they¿ll blow your mind. And the melody and harmonies ¿ uh! ¿ I¿m in ecstasy. What song is more infectious than the beat-driven and bluesy ¿You Can¿t Do That¿? The closest thing that comes to it is the preceding song, ¿When I Get Home.¿ And listen to the way the guitars magically jangle around Paul and Ringo¿s rock-solid foundation on the impassioned ¿I¿m Happy Just to Dance With You.¿ (John wrote this fantastic song, but listen to George¿s vocal here. The Beatles had THREE great singers!) Song after song¿it just doesn¿t get any better than this. Yes, there are many other Beatles¿ songs that equal this level of song writing. But what album is as consistent as this one? Ringo¿s shallow, yet palatable ¿Octopus¿s Garden¿ and Paul¿s lackluster, but genial ¿Maxwell¿s Silver Hammer¿ slightly mar the otherwise perfect ¿Abbey Road.¿ If the more up-tempo version of ¿Revolution¿ had replaced the sleepier one and ¿Hey Jude¿ had replaced John and Yoko¿s sophomoric ¿Revolution 9¿ (which far overstayed its welcome), the ¿White Album¿ would have been near perfect. But then we¿d still have Ringo¿s rather boring ¿Don¿t Pass Me By.¿ Don¿t misunderstand: I do not consider these songs to be bad. A diamond that is flawed in some way by comparison to one that is perfect is still a diamond. As an album, ¿A Hard Day¿s Night¿ is a flawless whole. I can¿t think of another album where EVERY SONG is such an amazingly perfect gem. I have many, many favorite albums ¿ albums that I would never, ever want to be without. Many of those are by The Beatles. But if I had to give up all but one¿well folks, I ultimately would be forced to admit that this is the one I¿d keep. This is the one I¿d take to that proverbial desert island. Cheers, Murray

I love this album! It's great, and the songs are just fun! If you haven't seen the movie, you should at least have the CD! Not all of the songs were in the movie, but still it's a great album, and that's all that really matters. I espeically like the songs And I Love Her and Happy Just to Dance With You! Those songs are just great and they're lots of fun! But of course, the title track has also got to be one of the best songs ever written! This is one of those MUST haves!

Well, you know the big ones off of this album. The title cut, And I Love Her, I Should Have Known Better, and probably, If I Fell. But the others are great as well and would have scored hits for any other band of it's day (or today?). Anytime At All, has some great lyrics by John, ''if the sun has faded away, I'll try to make it shine. There is nothing I wouldn't do....'' (sigh). I'll Be Back, and You Can't Do That, are both great tunes, as well, and will have you singing along in no time. The songs on this album were spread over a couple of discs here in the US. The United Artists' soundtrack as well as ''Something New.'' Your lucky that you can get these gems in one place. Wait for the re-release due in December of 2000, and snap it up.... fast!

Appearances can be deceptive. ... While the Beatles to the world appeared in photos as busy 'goofing off' in tropical sun drenched Miami Beach in between rehearsals for their second appearance on 'Ed Sullivan', in fact they were busy trying out some brand new Rickenbacker guitars just given to them and also writing the songs for this very album. It was the busiest period of their young lives and they were exhibiting unbelievable productivity. The first totally 'self-composed' Beatles album, the songs still sound alive, fresh, energetic and fun. George's newly invented prototype 12 string electric Rickenbacker now became a new part of their 1964 'trademark sound' and would highly influence groups yet to come, such as the Byrds, The Turtles and Jefferson Airplane. 'Hard Day's Night' remains a timeless crowd pleasurer and true joy to listen to!

Editorial Reviews
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
A Hard Day's Night not only was the de facto soundtrack for their movie, not only was it filled with nothing but Lennon-McCartney originals, but it found the Beatles truly coming into their own as a band. All of the disparate influences on their first two albums had coalesced into a bright, joyous, original sound, filled with ringing guitars and irresistible melodies. A Hard Day's Night is where the Beatles became mythical, but this is the sound of Beatlemania in all of its giddy glory. Decades after its original release, its punchy blend of propulsive rhythms, jangly guitars, and infectious, singalong melodies is remarkably fresh. There's something ...
