Editorial Reviews

The Romance Readers Connection - Lora McDonald
“…Smith gives you just enough of each situation to keep you guessing and hoping that these two will get together and find the perpetrators responsible for the drug distribution and the murder. The other characters in the story help to round out and solidify the relationship of the hero and heroine. The story is easy to follow and I loved the sexual tension and the element of surprise in the case. This is one of the best romantic suspense stories I’ve read in a long time.

    A Heartbeat Away

Samille Broussard is a diversion investigator with the DEA. Headstrong and ambitious, she sets her sights on working in the FBI¿s lab, It¿s the break that she has been waiting for and is determined to prove that she is up to the task. Brant Kincaid is the FBI¿s ¿super agent¿ with a secret in his past that propels him to overachieve. Brant and Samille are thrown together to investigate the connection between a mysterious drug and ten high profile teenagers in comas. Samille is determined to prove that she can do the job and Brant is not so convinced because she is after all just a rookie. Despite the fact that the FBI and DEA are separate government agencies and do not perform the same tasks, Brant and Samille are able to carve out a good working relationship and in the midst discover a growing attraction that is undeniable. Ms. Smith creates an interesting suspense that only gets better as you turn the pages. In this novel, she provides a lot of detail explaining the job of a diversion investigator while still creating an intense investigation for the reader to become absorbed and attempt to work through. With a strong voice this author introduces an array of stand alone characters whose presence in presented in a clear and purposeful way. I as the reviewer felt that the romance, was slow to develop, but when it arrived, it left you with a feel of sentimentality, which only added to the ending which was nicely gift-wrapped. A.C. A terrific romantic suspense thriller

IN DC nine teens attending a party fall into comas. Though the Capital police and the FBI investigate what happened, DEA becomes involved when the bodies of each one contains a substance similar to Ecstasy. With her pharmaceutical background DEA assigns Samille Broussard to work with the FBI on the case................. FBI Agent Brant Kincaid does not believe the rookie Samille is ready to tackle such a dangerous case as she has been out of the academy only six months. She on the other hand is elated to work with the professional who she believes can teach her so much about field work, but also has dreamed of leisure activities since they first met at the FBI Academy. Brant quickly admits that Samille seems to have a way with the students and more so with him as they make inquiries intoto what happened. However, neither is aware of the danger from someone who plans to make a fortune with the newest designer drug on the street.................... A HEARTBEAT AWAY is a terrific romantic suspense thriller that showcases two wonderful federal law enforcement heroes. The story line is action-packed, but does not neglect the growing attraction between the lead couple in fact the hard nosed hero is so distracted by his feisty intelligent partner he almost blows the case. Though a final twist seems unnecessary and subtracts from a great thriller, fans will enjoy this look into the illegal world of designer drugs, a classic supply and demand case of the market at work............... A Terrific Romantic Suspense

Maureen Smith crafts quite an ENGAGING romantic suspense...she also provides very descriptive/informative details into the role of the DEA diversions investigators, all while keeping you entertained....the characters are MEMORABLE...the secondary characters aid in adding depth to the main characters, Samille and Brant...I enjoy the close-knit family ties displayed throughout...the INTENSE instant attraction and the verbal sparring between Samille and Brant keeps me turning the pages...and their back and forth antics as Samille and Brant make EVERY attempt to fight their growing attraction only serves add more INTRIGUE....Mrs. Smith will keep you on the edge of your seat as Samille and Brant start to unveil the many secrets surrounding this CHILLING and mysterious criminal investigation...A Heartbeat Away is definitely a GEM in the romantic suspense genre...at times it seems a bit too long, but it's still a worthwhile read.
