Publisher's Weekly named this stunning novel one of the BEST BOOKS OF 2013!

First he fought for his country. Now he'll fight for her.

Two years after losing her husband in Afghanistan, Carly Lowry has rebuilt her life in Tallgrass, Oklahoma. She has a job she loves teaching third grade and the best friends in the world: fellow military wives who understand what it means to love a man in uniform. She's comfortable and content...until she meets a ruggedly handsome stranger who rekindles desires Carly isn't quite sure she's ready to feel.

Staff Sergeant Dane Clark wanted to have a loving family, a twenty-year Army stint, and then a low-key civilian career. But the paratrooper's plans were derailed by a mission gone wrong. Struggling to adjust to his new life, he finds comfort in the wide open spaces of Tallgrass—and in the unexpected attention of sweet, lovely Carly. She is the one person who makes him believe life is worth living. But when Carly discovers he's been hiding the real reason he's come to Tallgrass, will Dane be able to convince her he is the hero she needs?

Publishers Weekly
Pappano (In the Enemy’s Arms) shines in this poignant tale of love, loss, and learning to love again. Teacher Carly Lowry wants nothing more than to find peace after her husband, Army staff sergeant Jeff Lowry, is killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan. Two years later, what’s sustaining her is the Fort Murphy Widows Club, aka the Tuesday Night Margarita Club, based at Fort Murphy, Okla. On one club outing, Carly meets a man who captures her attention: Sgt. Dane Clark, who lost a leg in combat and who can’t quite believe anyone will want him again. Can the two overlook their losses and build a new life together? Pappano creates achingly real characters whose struggles will bring readers to tears. Well-placed secondary plots seamlessly set the stage for additional books in the series. Agent: Melissa Jeglinski, Knight Agency. (July)
RT Book Reviews
"Pappano's latest is a touching story about loss, love and acceptance. Tender to the core, her story is filled with heartwarming characters who you can't help but fall in love with, and she tells their stories candidly and poignantly. The ending will simply melt your heart."

Carly Lowry is afraid of heights, but conquering her fears is part of what gets Carly out of bed. Otherwise, she’d still be mourning her husband, Jeff, killed in Afghanistan more than two years ago. A chance meeting with former paratrooper Dane Clark in a cave at Turner Falls leads to another at the gymnasium at Fort Murphy in Tallgrass, OK, where she teachers and yet another at the Three Amigos restaurant at the weekly get-together of the Tuesday Night Margarita Club, aka the Fort Murphy widows. Something about this woman attracts Dane like no other, but Carly speaks too much of her perfect husband and her perfect marriage for Dane to think she would be interested in a guy with only one leg. Yeah, the army knows how to build state-of-the-art prostheses; it just can’t seem to rebuild Dane’s self-esteem.

Verdict Pappano (coauthor, Christmas Confidential) opens her “Tallgrass” series with the sweet pairing of a woman who agonizes over leaving everything as it was before her husband died and a soldier who thinks if he ignores his artificial limb, his own leg will still exist. Authentic details of army life and battle experience will glue readers to the page. This poignant and engaging title is a good fit for all romance collections.—Bette-Lee Fox, Library Journal
