Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.From Barnes & Noble
India's history is one of an astonishing cultural continuity that has reasserted itself time and again in spite of foreign conquest and Western domination. From the early cultures of the Indus to the glittering power of the Mughal Empire, the extraordinary epic that is India unfolds in the pages of this unusual history. Choosing to tell the story from the structural patterns of Indian civilization rather than from a chronology of events, the authors, both acknowledged scholars in different areas of the country's rich history, present a tapestry of political, economic, social, and cultural factors. Here is the grand sweep of culture, from the early settlements of the Gangetic Valley to the regional kingdoms of medieval India to the rule of the Raj. Colorful and exciting, this survey incorporates recent research to tell the lively story of a country that has emerged as one of the most important nations of the world.Product Details
