The book will focus on the muscadine grape, the antebellum success of NC wineries (#1 in the US in 1840); post-Civil War efforts, the effect of Prohibition, and the twentieth century renaissance. An epilogue will present an overview of the industry at this time. Images will come from UNC Chapel Hill, (NC Collection and Southern Historical Collection), UNC Asheville, Polk County Historical Society, the South Caroliniana Library (USC), other repositories and the private collections of David Fussel, Sr. (Duplin Wines), George Denka (Shelton Vineyards), and the author’s personal collection.
