Overview

The Works of Francis William Newman on Religion: A Critical Edition preserves F. W. Newman's important contribution to the historical and moral criticism of biblical literature, as well as his challenging perspectives on institutional and national religion, the philosophy of religion, and practical religion and morality. This century has witnessed a growing academic interest in the religious thought of F. W. Newman, an interest that should be immensely encouraged by having the complete body of his religious writings readily accessible in a critical edition.

Francis William Newman (1805-1897), younger brother to Cardinal John Henry Newman, was arguably the leading expounder of pure Theism in nineteenth-century England. His academic attainments include occupying the Chair of Latin at University College, London, from 1846 to 1862, but he is, perhaps, better known for the breadth of his literary efforts on behalf of various social causes and legal reforms.

What People are Saying About This

T. K. Cheyne
F. W. Newman's "History of the Hebrew Monarchy, written about the middle of the century, . . . remains to this day one of the clearest and most interesting and authoritative accounts of that people. To most readers of the time of its first publication it must have seemed a daringly iconoclastic work, and even now there are many who would follow some of its pages with bated breath. Yet neither its fairness, its lack of prejudice, nor its scholarly foundations can be in question, and combined with these traits it has qualities of style which must give it a lasting value for the popular reader. (T. K. Cheyne, Professor of Scripture Interpretation, Oriel College, Oxford, 1908)
