This is a rare popular history: exciting, precise but not dense, covers the grand scope of venice from 800 to napolean. Filled with off-beat colorful vignettes, covers international affairs, domestic politics, venetian art, architecture, religion, etc. A literary caravan and feast.

An accurate & historical book which makes the people come to life, is entertaining and teaches you a lot about European history I never learned in school or college. Excellent book.
