At times, the production is a bit too clean for the music, and there are times that Holcombe sounds a little unsure as a performer, but overall, the songs are sturdy and memorable, and Hundred Lies indicates that he's growing into a peformer the equal of his songs.

Malcolm Holcombe's debut album is a masterpiece in the country/folk genre. His gravel voice, reminiscent of early Tom Waits or Crooked Fingers, delivers powerful lyrics in an understated manner. Outstanding songs on the album are A Hundred Lies, Justice in a Cradle, and a Far Cry from Here, although I find myself compulsively listening to the entire album time and again. This is an album that will grow on you the more you listen, with depths in the songs which resonate long after the album ends.
