A tender, winsome ballad, it's keyed by Krauss's voice at its most haunting, gently caressing lyrics describing an inner wealth money can't buy, as an undercurrent of sighing strings supports her honey-smooth reading. The Union Station fellows (supplemented by the Abraham Laboriels, Jr. and Sr., on drums and bass, respectively) join in for an easy-gliding love song by Sarah Siskind, "Simple Love," another new track that qualifies as an instant classic. Also included are movie songs (notably Krauss's ethereal rendering of Sting's "You Will Be My Ain True Love," from Cold Mountain;) sides recorded for special projects such as the Chieftains' Down the Old Plank Road (the traditional Irish murder ballad "Molly Bàn") and the superb Louvin Brothers tribute album, Livin', Lovin', Losin' (a sweet, spare, beautifully harmonized duet with James Taylor on "How's the World Treating You"); and duets featured on other artists' albums, such as "Whiskey Lullaby," the wrenching account of an alcoholic's suicide that was one of the key tracks on Brad Paisley's Mud on the Tires. The most unlikely duets are two with '80s pop star John Waite, one a countrified take on his signature hit "Missing You," the other a feather-light new love ballad, "Lay Down Beside Me." Always aiming for the heart, Krauss hits it dead center every time.

The title of Rounder's Alison Krauss compilation A Hundred Miles or More: A Collection is a bit misleading. While it does contain previously recorded material, it is not to be taken as a greatest-hits package; rather, the 16 tracks are compiled from Krauss' numerous collaborations, soundtrack appearances, and other non-Union Station gigs. That said, it's as solid a set of material as one could want from the multi-talented Krauss. As a voice for hire, there are few singers with her emotional range, a gift she lends easily to the Elvis Costello-penned "Scarlet Tide" from the Cold Mountain soundtrack. Award-winning duets with Brad Paisley ("Whiskey Lullaby") and James Taylor ("How's the World Treating You") -- the latter a Louvin Brothers cover -- as well as collaborations with the Chieftains ("Molly Bán") from the legendary Irish group's Down the Old Plank Road: The Nashville Sessions) and Sting ("You Will Be My Ain True Love") make this anthology of oddities far from superfluous. A Hundred Miles or More also boasts five new cuts, including "You're Just a Country Boy," "Simple Love," the gorgeous "Jacob's Dream," "Away Down the River," and "Sawing on the Strings," the latter of which harkens back to early, more bluegrass-oriented Krauss.

    Odds & Ends Make a Fine CD

    These tracks form a more cohesive whole than one might expect. Alison's bluegrass fans will feel let down, but fans of her exquisite voice will be pleased. The John Waite duets are not that great, but most of the rest is Krauss at her melancholy, wistful best.With this collection and the Robert Plant collaboration Raising sand, she is pushing Emmylou Harris for the title of best alt-country female vocalist.

    Melancholy

    I love Alison Krauss, but I found this collection a little sad and depressing. I think I prefer her upbeat bluegrass stuff.

    We saw Alison Krauss special on PBS and had to get the album.

    We have a couple of Alison Krauss' cd's and really enjoy her style and sound.

    At the right time

    Any one who has lost a mate will fell the rush of comfort in the previously unreleased song 'Away Down the River.' I can't tell how many times that song has held me together. Allison and the song are truly surperb.

    Outstanding, Still Standing Out

    This album gives long time fans all they could hope for..the selection of the new material is perfectly chosen...Alison has achieved , with this collection, a creative level that would be hard to match for any artist..it's obvious that she sets the bar very high, and that is what makes this album such a joy to listen to.The arrangement, the vocals, and instrumentation all fit like a glove.

    Alison Krauss never disappoints, but even this singbird and gifted musician has outdone herself on this release!! What a superb mixture of old and new--the very best kind of a CD made!! I had never cared much for John Waite previously, but I find a new appreciation of his "Missing You" with Krauss' addition!! Krauss' gospel tracks will stir any listener's soul and her duets with Paisley "perhaps the very best to be found in the country genre!!" and Taylor are touching and define the very meaning of love and pain. Buy this one, put it in the Cd player, and sit back to discover a classic!! You shall be hearing it for years to come!!

    I have alway's loved alison krauss.she's rare find these's day's.a pure angel when she sing's . divine music I lisen for hour's.all her songs' are beautiful.pick this cd up soon. this is a must cd.
