Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
In this pleasing alphabet book/writing lesson, capital letters are cut into sky-blue pages and marked with arrows, allowing readers to trace them with their fingers. Each letter stands for a different animal or object, which appear on flaps, with additional items hidden beneath. Paired with Birkett's bright illustrations, the interactive components ought to give beginning writers a head start on their ABCs. Also available: 1 2 3: Count With Me. Ages 2–6. (Sept.)
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
The focus is the alphabet and using a unique approach kids are taught by running their fingers along the groved outline of each of the letters. An arrow shows the starting point for little fingers. In addition, there is a flap to lift revealing an item other than the one depicted and named on the outside of the flap. There is a wide variety, ranging from food to toys to animals. For the letter "O" there is an orange while "J" presents jam and "D" offers a duck. The book can be used to build a vocabulary of at least fifty-two words, although many will probably be familiar to toddlers. It is a book that might be quite useful for children having difficulty creating letters on paper and the physical, tactile learning as well as sight (seeing the shape of the letters) may bring success. The back cover offers helpful hints for using the book with kids. One suggestion is to ask kids about other words that begin with a specific letter, but that is probably beyond most kids who are obviously just learning their letters. It would also seem to introduce an understanding of phonetic or sight recognition of words starting with a particular letter. In this reviewers opinion not a particularly useful or appropriate suggested activity. Part of the "Smart Kids Trace-and-Flip" series. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
Kirkus Reviews
There's a lot of interaction in these ABCs. Each letter of the alphabet (both upper- and lowercase) receives its due in golden and dark type on blue backgrounds; the uppercase letters are die cut, allowing the yellow to peek through and creating a physical as well as visual shape. Arrows and numbers outline tracing steps for tactile emphasis, and compact flaps hold recognizable drawings of items with the appropriate initial letters. Lifting the flap reveals an additional item. "Pp is for pig / and pear // Qq is for Queen / and quilt." The selections wholly occupy their defined spaces (the picture of the yacht resembles a toy sailboat more than an impressive vessel). The companion, Count with Me, compiles numerals 1 through 20 in a similar format, along with simple addition problems at the end. The format allows for significant developmental breadth; younger children may focus on manipulating the squares while an older audience emphasizes problem-solving and writing. Varied applications from A to Z. (Board book. 2-6)
