Overview

Don't be fooled by the goofball caricatures on this album's cover -- oy, your bubbe should only have known from such a good compilation! Putumayo's Jewish Odyssey gathers tracks both sacred and secular from a broad swath of performers of Jewish music. Indeed, from the cradle of Jewry in the Middle East to the exodus destinations of New York, Havana, and São Paulo, these cuts offer a splendid peek at the musical vivacity of the world's sundry Semitic communities. Britain's premier roots group the Burning Bush play the brisk, clarinet-and-strings klezmer piece "Rad Halaila." Zohar fuse Moroccan melodies with funky jazz stylings on "Shabbat Medley." Israel's late, great Ofra Haza warbles a delightful piece of roots pop with "Rachamim," while Brazil's Fortuna offers a haunting Iberian take on that timeless anthem of peace "Shalom Aleichem." But perhaps the tastiest of all is the sumptuous Sephardic fanfare of "Las Estreyas," by Chilean-Cuban diva Consuelo Luz. The astutely written liner notes are especially useful to newcomers to the music -- or those who neglected to pay attention during Hebrew school.

All Music Guide - Stacia Proefrock
This collection of music from across the Jewish Diaspora shows the diverse influences that Jewish culture has absorbed over the years. From Arabic-influenced Sephardic sounds to the jazzy styles of modern kezmer to the Middle Eastern dance-pop of Ofra Haza, this collection goes around the world and back to present the sound of a people. This compilation hangs together better than most of the comprehensive offerings from Putumayo and contains some real winners like Haza's "Rachamin" and "Di Goldene Pave" from the Klezmatics featuring Chava Albertstein.
