A Kid's Catalog of Israel is the next best thing to a round-trip ticket.
Children's Literature - Judy Chernak
Updated from its previous edition, this will still rank as a top choice for anyone interested in anything about Israel. Written and illustrated in a breezy style accessible to all, this reference includes everything from history, topography and politics to games, songs, crafts and recipes. There's a section featuring profiles of Israeli kids of a surprising variety; a virtual tour of the tiny country from its frigid mountains to the lowest spot on earth, the Dead Sea; an overview of its holidays; and a chilling account of its famous war heroes and undercover agents who contributed to the formation of the State in 1948. One of my favorites is about 39 grandmothers, each portrayed as a real woman of her time and her country, who illustrate the origins of the Jewish people and how they survived, traveling repeatedly from and back to the Land of Israel over the many centuries. The last profile is left blank, so the reader can fill in details of his/her own grandmother today, the 39th generation.
School Library Journal
Gr 4-8 The history, geography, culture, and archaeology of Israel as well as the Hebrew language are all enthusiastically described in this lively book. Stories, crafts, recipes, and songs round out the informational material. Burstein packs the pages with such excitement that casual readers will be drawn right in; the book can be read cover to cover easily, but will probably inspire browsing, as there is definitely something for everyone. The first chapter opens by describing a walking tour through Israel. A chapter called ``Kids in Israel'' has direct quotes from children and includes a section, ``How Are You Different? How Are You the Same?'' A mini-encyclopedia, bibliography, and index complete the text. Lively pencil drawings throughout create interest and add energy to the whole. Micki S.
