Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
Beginning with some facts and definitions about literacy from a global perspective, the book lays out detailed descriptions of service learning activities that focus on literacy. It is divided into sections called stages: Preparation, Action, Reflection and Demonstration. There are write-on pages (or they can be photocopied to be used more than once), suggestions for each project mentioned, including a step by step guide for how to start, develop and complete a project. The projects are designed for groups of between fifteen and thirty but scalability suggestions are included in the beginning material. At the end of the book is a list of other resources and a letter to adults about how best to use the workbook. It can be used equally well by young adults or adults guiding groups of young people. This book is a high-quality entry in the ‘How to Take Action" series from the publisher and it offers facts, quotations and real-life stories of projects that middle school and high school aged students have completed in their communities.
