Overview

Amy and Dan are in a race for their lives . . . and the enemy may be even closer than they think.

When seven members of their family were kidnapped by a sinister organization known as the Vespers, thirteen-year-old Dan Cahill and his older sister, Amy, vowed they'd stop at nothing to bring the hostages home. But then the ransom comes in and the Vespers demand the impossible. Amy and Dan have just days to track down and steal an ancient map. The only catch? No one has seen the map for half a century.

Now Amy and Dan are on a desperate search that will lead them to the Nazis, spies, a mad king and some of history's dirtiest secrets. It's the race of their lives . . . and one misstep will mean certain death for the hostages.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Pat Trattles
"Dan Cahill didn't realize just how many policemen there were in the world until he became an international art thief." If that first line of the story doesn't capture readers' attention then they are obviously not mystery and adventure fans. The second book in the "Cahills vs. Vespers" saga in the "39 Clues" series from Scholastic, Inc., this book will keep readers on the edge of their seats until the very end. In the previous book several members of Dan and Amy Cahill's family were kidnapped and the two teenagers forced to steal a priceless piece of art in order to get them back. But that wasn't enough for the kidnappers. Now Dan and Amy must track down and steal an ancient map—one that disappeared more than fifty years ago. Their search takes them throughout Europe where they will visit "Mad King Louis' castle," a church whose sculptures are made from human bones, and other intriguing locations where they will learn about the Nazis and a World War II era international spy ring as they put the pieces of the puzzle together to find the map. In addition to writing a suspense-filled story in which Dan and Amy are pursued by ruthless killers at every turn, Watson has filled her story with historical and geographical references which add interesting layers to the story. Before starting this book, however, it is highly recommended that readers first read the previous books in the series. The cast of characters is huge, and without the background from previous books it's difficult to keep track of who are the "good guys" and who are the bad. Reviewer: Pat Trattles

    This book is good

    This is a good book
    **!!SPOILER ALERT!!**
I think it is sad at the end when mcintyre dies, atticus gets abducted and the map and the diary get stolen. But i think that is is awesome that amy and dans dad is alive (probably)
    **!!SPOILER OVER!!**
compared to the other book the one is awesome.
