Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Pat Trattles
"Dan Cahill didn't realize just how many policemen there were in the world until he became an international art thief." If that first line of the story doesn't capture readers' attention then they are obviously not mystery and adventure fans. The second book in the "Cahills vs. Vespers" saga in the "39 Clues" series from Scholastic, Inc., this book will keep readers on the edge of their seats until the very end. In the previous book several members of Dan and Amy Cahill's family were kidnapped and the two teenagers forced to steal a priceless piece of art in order to get them back. But that wasn't enough for the kidnappers. Now Dan and Amy must track down and steal an ancient map—one that disappeared more than fifty years ago. Their search takes them throughout Europe where they will visit "Mad King Louis' castle," a church whose sculptures are made from human bones, and other intriguing locations where they will learn about the Nazis and a World War II era international spy ring as they put the pieces of the puzzle together to find the map. In addition to writing a suspense-filled story in which Dan and Amy are pursued by ruthless killers at every turn, Watson has filled her story with historical and geographical references which add interesting layers to the story. Before starting this book, however, it is highly recommended that readers first read the previous books in the series. The cast of characters is huge, and without the background from previous books it's difficult to keep track of who are the "good guys" and who are the bad. Reviewer: Pat Trattles

My book was very good and it is very entertaining. The book always made me want to read more. If you want to read this book start at book one or you will be confused like I was. In the book it is about two kids named Amy and Dan Cahill and their cousins. Some of their family members get captured by the Vespers. The Vespers are the Cahill’s worse enemies. The Vespers make Amy and Dan do bad things and if they fail there family will get killed. In this book they have to find out about the Nazis, spies, a mad king, and the worlds dirtiest secrets. They have to find what they are looking for before Vesper one kills their cousins. Will they make it in time or will someone get killed read the books to find out.The characters are Amy, Dan, Johan, and Hamilton. I like the book since the author made it exciting and filled with mysteries around every corner. In conclusion this book was really good. It had action and really cools characters. If you like to be on the edge of your set you would love to read action books. Read the sires of the book and play the game to help the Cahill’s defeat the Vespers. This book would be a great book to read for all ages. It is really entertaining book to read. I give this book a five star rating since it is a great book to read.

A King’s Ransom “Bang!” goes the gun to start the 39 clues; follow Dan and Amy as they help save their prisoner sibling and save them from the Vespers. This fast paced, energy filled, and action- packed novel by Jude Watson is one of the very best books I’ve ever read. It mostly takes place in Prague, but moves throughout other countries. I would recommend this novel to any explorer- type child who loves action. Andrew P.

This book is a wonderful read. It is very well written. The two main characters are Amy and Dan Cahill. There realitives have been kidnapped. They have to find things for Vesper 1. The Vespers are evil. If Amy and Dan do not find all the things for Vesper 1 there friends and realitives will be killed. Amy and Dan go all over the world and find things for V - 1. This is an excellent read for kids and young adults. I read the first book Maze of Bones in 4th grade. I reccomend this for kids about 10 and up. This is a good book for a parent to read to a kid if they are about 9. Highly reccomended read.
