What a wonderful heartfelt story! I will read anything by Courtney Milan. She has a gift for creating characters that stay with you long after you are finished with the book. Even though this book is a novella, it still has a satisfying amount of emotion and plot to it. You will love the story of Jonas and Lydia.

If you like historical romance, you are 99.99% assured to enjoy this Christmas novella. Short, but not too short (just over 200 pages). Interesting historical details about Victorian medical practices are integral to the plot. Great holiday atmosphere, too. Would be a great gift to send almost anyone who reads romance in ebook format.

This book contains amazing characters and historical detail in a small space. The medical history here is excellent but the compelling love
story is even better. Wonderful. Read it now.

This book did not follow the usual pattern of romance books. It was different and delightful.

Not one of her better stories. The characters weren't all that likeable.

I loved this novella. It is heartwarming and sweet, contains interesting tidbits of medical history, and made me feel very lucky to be living in the modern age. Much as I might sometimes wish to play princess and drape myself in the beautiful garments of yesteryear, I'll cherish my jeans and shapeless sweaters if the trade-off is not being purposely poisoned by a doctor who has no idea what's going on with my ladyparts and who doesn't believe he has any need to wash his hands... ever. Anyway, back to the story... I didn't entirely care for Lydia as a secondary character in The Duchess War, so I was more than a little concerned that I wouldn't feel drawn to her as the heroine of this story. I have this thing about self-deception -- I can't abide it in myself or others -- and that's pretty much how Lydia copes with her past. It's possible that I just approached this book with a heart set on loving it, but I suspect that the reason I was able to love Lydia is that we see so much of her from Jonas' perspective, and he loves her. Looking at her through his eyes, it was easier to see her strength, bravery, and kindness rather than willful self-deceit and naivete. And Jonas... I just loved him. Bravo, Courtney Milan.

I really enjoyed this book even though it was a bit short! This isn't about a wealthy duke or a handsome rake. It is about a beautifully flawed, normal man! Okay, maybe not entirely normal we will call him a bit flawed. This story leaves off where The Duchess War ends. Telling us the story of Lydia and Jonas. I highly recommend reading this series in order (Brothers Sinister series) as I have enjoyed them all and they fit nicely when reading back to back.

“Courtney Milan blows me away every time! A KISS FOR MIDWINTER was another great story by one of my favorite historical authors right now.” ~Under the Covers
This is the second Christmas themed short story I’ve read by Ms. Milan and I have to admit, she has a way to tell an engaging short story. Of course, in this case I already knew the heroine of the book from reading THE DUCHESS WAR but I didn’t know about her past and what had happened to her. All of which was only hinted at.
Miss Lydia Charingford got pregnant at a young age. When her family brought her to the doctor, Doctor Jonas Grantham was there to learn and in the future take over the practice. He didn’t say a word, which in Lydia’s mind was the same as him passing judgement on her the same as everyone else.
Now years later, Doctor Grantham comes back to Leicester and runs into Lydia. And realizes that no other woman will do in his search for a wife. It will be her and no one else. But he won’t have an easy time at breaking down her walls.
Like I said, I already cared about Lydia from the first book, so she was easy to love and understand right away in this short story. She’s managed to stay positive even after everything that has happened to her, which in those times would’ve meant complete and total ruin. The shock of finding out why she lost the baby was also a big one. That’s a lot of emotional things to deal with. And in between all that she also has to deal with her own attraction and her body’s reaction to Doctor Grantham.
And I just LOVED Doctor Grantham. He’s blunt. My favorite kind of historical hero. He told it like it was and never curbed his words out of a sense of what’s right and appropriate to talk about it. It was just always about the truth, plain and simple. Even when it didn’t come out quite right.
His caring side was definitely what Lydia needed as well and I think they make a perfect match. Even though Lydia is not the kick ass heroine I prefer to read about, she still has a spine and is not pushover. She tries to see the good in everybody and the positive in any situation, but she is also a realist.
I guess my only complaint is that I wanted more! Not that their story wasn’t told perfectly the way it was, but I’m greedy and I want more of Courtney’s writing. Courtney Milan blows me away every time! A KISS FOR MIDWINTER was another great story by one of my favorite historical authors right now.

Well, I guess honesty is the best policy, right? I have to admit then that I wasn't a fan of Lydia's when we met her in The Duchess War, but I also have to admit that she won me over, totally, in this story. Her heartbreaking tale is... well... heartbreaking, and so her treatment of Minnie in The Duchess War was, in my opinion, forgivable. Part of her problem is that she's a woman who believes she has no chance for a happy life - even when Jonas Grantham, the most annoying man she's ever met, decides that it's time for him to take a wife, and Lydia is the one he wants.
Now, he just has to convince her to have him!
Honestly, I laughed and cried and came away loving both Jonas and Lydia, not just for who they are, but also for who they are not. Both tortured souls striving to live with their "demons" and to do the right thing, always. Apart they were splendid people, but together - they are perfect!
The bottom line: This is, as are all Courtney Milan's stories, a delightful, witty, heartfelt romantic and sexy tale, and works very well as a standalone. If you're looking for a short holiday story sure to leave you with a smile on your face, then look no further. A Kiss For Midwinter is a story I'll be reading again and again, and I'm sure you will, too.
My thanks to Ms. Milan for providing me with a copy of this novella! It was such a wonderful holiday treat!
