In Bronwen Evans’s Loveswept debut, a pair of damaged souls ignite each other’s deepest passions—even as they tempt fate by deceiving the world.

Desperate to escape her abusive past, Sarah Cooper disguises herself as a governess in the employ of Christian Trent, Earl of Markham, the man who, long ago, she fantasized about marrying. Despite the battle scars that mar his face, Sarah finds being near Christian rekindles her infatuation. A governess, however, has no business in the arms of an earl, and as she accompanies Christian on his voyage home, Sarah must resist her intense desires—or risk revealing her dangerous secrets.

One of the renowned Libertine Scholars, Christian Trent once enjoyed the company of any woman he chose. But that was before the horrors of Waterloo, his wrongful conviction of a hideous crime, and his forcible removal from England. Far from home and the resources he once had, Christian believes the life he knew—and any chance of happiness—is over . . . until his ward’s governess sparks his heart back to life, and makes him remember the man he used to be. Now Christian is determined to return to England, regain his honor, and win the heart of the woman he has come to love.

    Plot spoilers and kids

Between all the plot spoilers giving away the entire book then bragging about getting their book for free, and kids using the nook as a chat room and a sex room, it is hard to get a real review. Please bn, cant you do something to these plot spoilers and kids? Cant they be banned and their posts deleted, especially the obscene ones?

I just read A KISS OF LIES and I must say" AWESOMENESS!!&qu

I just read A KISS OF LIES and I must say" AWESOMENESS!!" I love all wounded heroes. Most are wounded inside but Christian was scared inside and out. Sara (she will always be Sara to me) was also scarred inside and out. I read a lot because I am disabled and read historical romance send my mind to a different world of love, action, villains, heroes and heroine. I can't wait until I get all the LIBERTINE SCHOLARS series. I like how you leave me with one but two cliffhanger. No three cliffhangers. Who married who? Where is Grayson? Who Is so angry with all 6 men and Sara? This Series kinda reminds me of Renée Renee Bernard JADED series. Have you read any of her books? I give this book my top score of 5 fingers up and 10 toes!!

Delightful Characters With a Compelling Storyline

As a fan of continuing story arcs in books, I found this first book in the Disgraced Lords series a fast-paced and compelling read that sets up an intriguing mystery of revenge amidst a group of immensely appealing and honorable men forced to suffer for the sins of their fathers. In this story two scarred souls come together under the guise of a lie but find love with the truth and ultimately heal each other's damaged souls.

Christian, Lord Markham, grew up the son of a violent and vile man whose rage killed his wife. Christian's tried to be nothing like him but fears the occasional blackouts and darkness he experiences since coming home from the war will bring out that familial blood. The outward scars left from the war and being accused of a rape he didn't commit have him hiding out in Canada where he meets a woman running from her own pain. His need to protect the underdog has him immediately drawn to her and the feelings of love she inspires in him. She accepts him scars and all and represents the chance for a life of happiness that he promised himself if he lived through his injuries. He's soon braving society's wrath to clear his name as well as the woman he wants to make his wife. His life, along with hers, is soon put in danger as a vengeful person from the past continues their plan to destroy the members of the Libertine Scholars. Christian is an admirable hero who's been through a lot of pain throughout his life and deserves a HEA. He's been wallowing in pity until the day Sarah enters his life and brings him back to the land of the living.

Sarah aka Serena was sold to the highest bidder in marriage and abused both mentally and physically by a vile husband. Believing herself a murderess she finds herself hired as Christian's ward's governess and on her way back home to where even more danger awaits from two souls bent on revenge. Serena is an admirable heroine who bravely lived through some truly horrible deeds. She's remained kind-hearted, and though cautious of Christian at first, is drawn to him immediately and seeks to soothe his damaged body and soul. She's strong-willed and will do anything to keep Christian safe as he keeps her safe too.

The romance between Christian and Serena crackles with sexual tension from the moment they meet and quickly builds from there with her setting the pace as he's desperate to earn her trust. The sexual interludes are super steamy as well as sweetly romantic as each believes themselves unworthy of love. Their connection is deep as each is willing to put their lives on the line for the other. The mystery revolving around the Libertine Scholars is intriguing with a well-plotted beginning depicted in this book to leave me clamoring for more. The other Libertine Scholars are equally compelling with their unique and brashly charming personalities and I look forward to their stories being told and getting another step closer to whodunit. This is my first book by Ms. Evans and with the talent seen here I'm adding her to my list of favorite historical authors and recommend you do too.

A KISS OF LIES by Bronwen Evans is a fast paced Historical Roma

A KISS OF LIES by Bronwen Evans is a fast paced Historical Romance. What an exciting beginning to a new series, “The Disgraced Lords” #1. I absolutely loved this title. It is fast paced and filled with passion, adventure, mystery, suspense, danger, and love. Although, it leaves you holding your breath for the next installment, what a story! The sins of the fathers are visited or forced upon the sons. Someone is trying to kill Christian and Sarah, as well as the other renowned Libertine Scholars, maybe for something their father’s did years prior. Follow, Christian Trent, Earl of Markham and Sarah Cooper, both have secrets, both are in danger of not only losing their hearts but their lives. Oh, yeah, Christian’s little ward is a hand full and one you can’t help but fall in love with also. Christian, was scarred in war in more ways than one. Sarah, is running from an abusive past. Well written with engaging characters as well as a plot to literally die for, how can you go wrong with “A Kiss of Lies”. You do not want to miss a moment of “A Kiss of Lies”. Well done!! I can hardly wait for the next installment. Ms. Evans is an engaging, talented Historical Romance author. A must read! OMG! For readers who enjoy mystery, suspense, passion and romance, this is a must read! Received for an honest review from the publisher and Net Galley.

Sarah is on the run from a horrible crime. She is a long way from home and takes the job as governess to make her way back. Christian is also away from home having been accused of horrible crimes. He knows it's time to go back home and sort things out. He hires Sarah to watch over his ward. He is attracted to her but doubts she can see past his scars. Sarah knows who Christian is but keeps her identity from him. She has always wanted him but is afraid of being close to a man. They both begin to care for each other and heal their unseen wounds. Both are in danger of more than falling in love and have to try and stay alive.

Christian is a very protective man who does not want to see any woman hurt. He would never hurt one. He is ashamed of his scars and how people act around them. He is a wonderful man but not many woman look past his scars. Sarah in some ways is very timid. She is scared and it's very understandable why when you here her story. She is also a very caring person who wants to heal Christian.

I just have to say I need the next book in this series now. If this one is any indication of what is to come they all will be wonderful. I love both the main characters and how far they will go for each other. Both are preferred for each other and really heal each other. Even with bad past they get past it to love each other. There is also a mystery to solve and you really never know what will happen. Like I said I need the next book to see more of the mystery. The author does a great job keeping you on your toes. You get love, action, suspense and so much more in this fantastic book. Be sure to pick up a copy of you like a hot historical romance.

I was really surprised when I realised that this is the first book I've read by Bronwen Evans. I have several of her books, but somehow I've yet to read them, but that will definitely be remedied soon.

Let's start by talking about Sarah, our heroine. She has survived some horrific things in her life, but she's come through her trials unbroken and with a gentle, kind heart. The treatment she suffered at the hands of her husband was heart breaking, the scars on her body are nothing compared to the ones he left on her soul. It's a testament to the strength of her character that she hasn't become an embittered and cynical woman, and she's one of my favourite heroines I've read about in a while.

It sounds slightly sadistic to say that I love a tortured hero, and poor Christian certainly fits the bill. After surviving a cruel attack on the battlefields of France that left him scarred and self-pitying, he has a rather cold reception in England and is accused of a heinous crime, before being forcibly sent to Canada. Underneath Christian's scars and gruff demeanor, he's the same man but he doesn't see this. He's terrified of becoming an abusive monster, like his father. Despite this, he's very sweet and compassionate. I loved how he interacted with Lily, his ward, it really shows the kind of man he is.

Sarah and Christian have a sweet, intense and healing relationship. They both bear their scars, but together they find a hope and love worth fighting for. I just adored them together, they were ideally suited and the chemistry between them was scorching. At the beginning of their physical relationship, the trust they both give to the other person was just beautiful and a little overwhelming.

From the beginning you can't help but be completely absorbed into this story. The first chapter grabs your attention and you have to know what will happen next. There is plenty of intrigue and mystery to keep your attention riveted, and the story moves at a quick pace. The mystery elements don't detract from the romance between Christian and Sarah, which is the beating heart of this story.
The puzzle over who is determined to bring about Christian's downfall is very intriguing and guarantees that I'll be reading the whole series to unravel all of the twisted threads.

Overall, I definitely recommend this to all lovers of historical romance. It's emotionally compelling and beautiful, with a gripping plot that never fails to keep you eagerly turning the pages. It's safe to say that I loved this!

The Magic of his Touch 7 stars
I just finished a breathtaking novel set in the Regency era which filled me with beautiful emotions. What an excellent passionate love story of two tortured souls who will have a second chance to finally find peace, love and happiness in their lives. I strongly recommend Bronwen Evans’s book A KISS OF LIES, her first one, in The Disgraced Lords series, the story of 6 men part a group named the Libertine Scholars and the women who will change their lives forever. The author slowly developed the intrigue so well, that, I could not put it down; it kept me captivated until the early morning hours. It’s the story of Christian Trent, Earl of Markham, a war hero who suffers from PTSD and Sarah Cooper, an intelligent and loving young woman who also suffers from wounds of her past. To forget his problems, Christian was lived a wild life of alcohol and women. His life will change, when he meets Sarah, the new governess for Lily, a twelve years old girl, of which he is the legal guardian. Their paths will make you live beautiful moments of passion; the sensual love scenes are very well written. Breathtaking intensity between her two characters! This story was very emotional from beginning to end! This author is an exceptional quality writer who knows how to pull you in her story with words flowing. She is also a talented storyteller that gets you hooked the moment you start reading. She skillfully blended passion and intrigue and weaved her characters into her story. Sexual chemistry that takes you for a spin on a roller coaster of emotions! It’s a mesmerizing romance filled with, tenderness, passion and scandals in the world of the Regency. I am so glad I decided to read Ms. Evans’s book and I’ll definitely check out her next book A PROMISE OF MORE which will be the story of Sebastian and Beatrice. You have to read A KISS OF LIES!

This was my first book from Bronwen Evans and I enjoyed it very much it defiantly won't be my last. Christian was a scarred hero and Serena a scared woman on the run after killing her abusive husband. Serena needs a place to hide and Christian needs a governess for his ward Lily. What begins as a working relationship quickly becomes an affair of the heart. There's some really good suspense and an intriguing mystery. I can't wait for Sebastian's book.

    Well Done!

Was it fate that interceded in the lives of two damaged souls, bringing them together just when they needed to be loved, protected and vindicated? A scarred war hero, once a rake of a man, is falsely accused of rape and is unceremoniously shipped off to Canada, picking up the pieces of his life and finding himself guardian to a young orphaned girl. A beautiful woman running from her brutal past becomes the young girl’s governess. Their lives have crossed before, among the wealthy in London, but Christian is unaware that this woman, Sarah has loved him from afar since she was a dreamy-eyed young girl. He is now used to being seen through eyes filled with pity or revulsion, but this mysterious woman never flinches at his damaged face. Her stoic beauty and countenance intrigues Christian, and he knows she is more than she claims. With an attraction that is magnetic, there is a connection that only comes when one finds that one special person, but with darkness haunting their pasts, can they learn to trust one another completely? They must be honest with each other, but is it worth the risk to their hearts?

A Kiss of Lies by Bronwen Evans, the first in her The Disgraced Lords series is a wonderful example of historical romance at its best! With a heroine who is far stronger than the angst-filled, swooning ladies of the ton, Sarah is a woman to be admired. Christian is a man before his time, never simply taking what he wanted, but ready to share in what was offered. With the introduction of several other lords, all part of the Libertine Scholars, a further mystery is introduced, paving the way for the next installments of this series as they most surely will each find the woman that will change their lives forever, finding a second chance at life and love. Ms. Evans takes her readers back through time to an era when passion could only rage behind closed doors, but rage, it does! Her writing flows smoothly while weaving romance, intrigue and redemption into the threads of an era long gone.

A Terrific Start to a New Series

Kiss of Lies is a a compelling story of two emotionally and physically scarred people who come together under unusual circumstances and while fighting to overcome the damage caused to each of them by Regency society's rigid rules and expectations explore a deep passion that leads to an enduring love which helps each to heal the other's hidden scars. Whew -a long sentence I know but I hope it captures the deep emotions running through this book. The characters were vivid and their pain and passion came through strongly. The suffering the heroine endured really helped to focus on the degree even the women in the upper level of the Polite Society were helpless to the will of their fathers and husbands. The hero despite having solid friends was also easily victimized under the manipulation of the ton's elite. The story kept throwing twists which kept my attention riveted while I was rooting for this couple to find peace together (along with the hero's ward). I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good historical romance with a strong helping of spicy passion.

An absolutely brilliant historical romance, full of secrets and dark pasts, A Kiss of Lies was a fantastic read. I completely and totally loved this book! Every bit of it, from start to finish, was wonderful. Loved it, just loved it!

Sarah was a lovely heroine. She had been through horrors in her marriage, but she survived and kept her strength. She definitely proved herself a worthy heroine in that regard. But, she was also kind and genuinely likable. I thought she was wonderful and I really liked her.

Christian was also amazing. This man was so sweet. He was determined to take care of his new ward and intent on protecting the woman he loved. The injuries he got during the war took away his confidence completely, but instead of being bitter, he stayed an honorable true gentleman. I adored him. I thought he was perfect.

The romance was wonderful. I thought it was so sweet how Sarah and Christian helped each other heal, and how both were willing to sacrifice for the other. And, the chemistry between them was sensuous and hot. I thought they were lovely together.

The plot was fast paced and I was hooked the entire way through. There were tons of secrets buried in the characters' pasts that took me by surprise and kept me on the edge of my seat. I really enjoyed the story and I thought the ending was lovely. I can't wait to read more from this series, because it's off to a fantastic start!

A Kiss of Lies was a brilliant historical romance. I absolutely loved this book! From the romance, to the secrets, it was wonderful. Romance lovers, this book is a must read.

Interesting hero and love interest ruined by foul words

I am always disappointed when smart storylines with characters having interesting backstories is ruined by explicit descriptions of depraved behavior, using vulgar language. It's so much more enjoyable to have the characters transformations revealed through intelligent writing. Brothels and prostitution represented in glamorous prose is a contradiction to the reality of the lifestyle. I much prefer the heroes sins to be implied without graphic details, and their thoughts and feelings to be understood through the progression of the story and changes that occur through their falling in love. I am even more interested to know whether it is the author, the editor, the publisher or all three who decide to add this content to a story that easily could stand alone without the smut. I wish there were a rating on the books to know which ones are filthy and should be avoided because they rob the reader of reading a worthy romance by reducing it to rubbish.

Written as a combined review with the second book of this series

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

OH ME OH MY!  I never thought I'd find a series that could be similar and/or match the Lonely Lords series I love so much ... well I have to say I have found another series that so far is just as good and satisfying! *HAPPY DANCE*

The Disgraced Lords by Bronwen Evans is a new historical romance series that centres around a group of Lords called "The Libertine Scholars".  These Lords all met and formed this group when they attended school.  They are known rakes, handsome, rich, smart and extremely loyal to each other.  When they realize that someone from their past is beginning to set each of them up for ruin and then attempting to take their lives, they band together like no other time and try to put their heads together to solve this mystery.  It just so happens that in the midst of all of this, they are meeting their perfect lady and struggling with a change of lifestyle that is going to claim them no matter how hard they fight it!

Let's meet the first two shall we?

    BOOK 1 - A Kiss of Lies

    DESCRIPTION

    REVIEW

You have to love a series that starts off with the tortured soul character.  LOL

Christian Trent is the Earl of Markham and suffers from a horrific event in his past.  Left badly scarred physically and mentally, he lives his life attached to the alcohol bottle and paying for woman's services.  He craves a gentle touch, a kind word that is genuine and comes from the heart.   When Christian is forced to flee England after being accused of a crime he ends up in Canada.  Suddenly finding himself the ward of a young girl, Christian decides to hire Sarah Cooper as a governess.

Sarah Cooper is also on the run and is hiding her real identity.  When she becomes the governess of Christian's ward, she also becomes the one woman that sees beyond his scars.  Christian will have her .... as his wife despite her status.  Truths are bound to surface though, leaving these two with many questions for the other.  In the midst of their own personal drama, both have a dangerous past that returns and threatens to tear them apart forever.

    BOOK 2 - A Promise of More

    DESCRIPTION

When Beatrice Hennessey sets out to confront Lord Coldhurst, the notorious rogue who killed her brother in a duel, her intent is to save her family from destitution. She’s determined to blackmail the man into a loveless marriage. She’ll make the wealthy Lord Coldhurst pay for the rest of his life. But while greeting his ship, Beatrice takes a tumble into the Thames—only to be fished out by a pair of strong masculine arms that tempt her to stay locked in their heated embrace forever. That is, until she realizes those arms belong to Sebastian Hawkestone, Lord Coldhurst himself.

The little drowned mermaid has an interesting proposition indeed; one that Sebastian is surprised to find quite agreeable. Although he’s had women more beautiful, she is pleasing to the eye, and besides, it’s time he fathered an heir. Beatrice promises to be the ideal wife; a woman who hates him with an all-consuming passion is far too sensible to expect romance. However, it isn’t long before Sebastian’s plan for a marriage of convenience unravels, and he’s caught up in the exhilarating undertow of seduction.

    REVIEW

Oh I want a Sebastian wrapped up and placed under my tree this Christmas .. he is YUMMY! :)

Sebastian Hawkestone, Lord Coldhurst is a hardcore womaniser, hottest man of this group and HE KNOWS IT!  Love will never capture him, marriage is a far away chore that he will one day have to do so he can have an heir.  He loves the ladies and the ladies love him.  When he is challenged to a duel something goes terribly wrong.  Another disgraced Lord forced to flee, he returns to England only to find himself saving the life of a woman that he would never believe to be waiting at the dock for his arrival.

Beatrice Hennessey is the sister of the man that Sebastian killed.  Her family is in dire straits and knowing that if anything, Sebastian has a strong sense of family, she guilts him into marrying her.  Sebastian thinks he has to provide an heir anyway and at least he will never fear falling in love with her.   Problem solved .. well not quite!  Sebastian is captivated by his innocent bride who responds so wickedly to his touch and before he knows it, they are falling in love.  When dangers knocks on the door however, suddenly Sebastian realizes he not only has much to gain, but much to LOSE!

I really enjoy Bronwen Evans writing style.  There is an engaging natural flow and we are teased with the promise of more mystery and storyline.  She writes delectable love scenes that make me melt and sigh.  Her characters are strong, damaged in their own way and perfectly imperfect.  If you love the historical romance genre, then do yourself a favour and check out this series.  I can't wait for the next book! :)

    HAPPY READING! :)

    Highly recommended

I love historical romances, especially when they are part of a series, so I was very happy to read this one since it is the first of what will be a series with an ongoing mystery. I usually can guess the ending before it comes but this book had several plot twists that kept me guessing!
