Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The life cycle of a koala is recorded from the night his mother and father mate. He spends six months in his mother's pouch, and another year and a half on her back; when he's two he finds his own tree, his own mate, and the cycle begins anew. The information here is meant to be conveyed in an engaging story, and most of the time the author handles her material well. But occasion ally, as when a fire breaks out and the mother and baby koala must search for a new home, the line between nonfiction and fiction is muddied. The pictures of the cuddly, smiling koalas also contrib ute to the feeling that this is more fanta sy than fact. Still, young readers may glean a lot of information here, with very little effort; perhaps that is the ad vantage of the format. (58

PreS-Gr 3 The life cycle of a baby koala is traced from conception through adulthood in this cartoon-like picture book. This vignette begins with the mating of two koalas followed by the birth, one month later, of an insect-sized baby. After moving to his mother's pouch, the baby koala develops for another five months before emerging to explore the rest of a koala's world. The book ends with the young koala on his own, calling for his own mate. Although the photographs in Denise Burt's I'm Not a Bear (Buttercup, 1985) supply a better view of these cuddly creatures, Gelman's text provides more information. Some oversimplification exists; koalas can eat over 20 species of gum tree leaves, not just one as is implied. While the colorful pictures, with their stiff figures and exaggerated expressions, are certainly nonscientific, the ``science in story'' format will appeal equally to read-aloud audiences and younger independent readers.
