    Obligation and Commitment to those we hold dear

    I really liked reading 'A Lesson Before Dying' by Ernest J. Gaines. The characters seemed like people that you already know. I particularly liked the way Mr. Gaines pointed out the analogies between Jefferson and God. This book is very emotional and it helps if you can discuss it with another person. I believe that reading this book can help us all to be better people.

    A real Lesson Before Dying thru open eyes

    While reading A Lesson Before Dying, I thought that prejudice was just a thing of the past. After reading the book I started to think that in some ways America is the same as in the 'Jim Crow Era'. I do not understand how or why these people had to go through such pain and agony just to survive the daily life. Gaines really gives you the feeling that you are really in Louisiana in the late 1940's. Some of the things that went on I would never had thought about until I read the book. It is as though he really has meaning behind this story. Although this is a trying time not only for the accused, but for everyone involved with him. To some the learning process began just as everything had fallen apart;meanwhile, to others it had opened their eyes to a whole new world. This is a very good book and I would reccommend it to anyone who wanted to know just how blacks were treated in the south before the Civil Rights Movement.
