Chapter One

Diary Entry

I'm so excited to be on vacation in Australia's beautiful Whitsunday islands. Nick and I were overdue for a relaxing, fun vacation, and this promises to be a week of just that (if the nausea doesn't get in the way). It's now three days into the trip, and I am feeling worse by the minute. I've been feeling queasy and sleepy for ten days. Even lying on the beach soaking up the sun seems too much like hard work.

As I pulled on my swimsuit earlier today I jokingly said to Nick, "Maybe I'm pregnant!" Nick's only response was an expression of utter disbelief. Neither of us really thought pregnancy was even a remote possibility since we just started trying. Besides Nick and I spend a lot of time on different sides of the globe, which is generally not conducive to making babies!

As unlikely as pregnancy was I still thought a trip to the pharmacy was warranted, even if just for the practice. Nick agreed to come with me ... reluctantly I'm sure, as he would have much preferred being out on a Jet Ski.

At the pharmacy we were greeted by a wall of pregnancy tests. Instinctively Nick moved toward the men's grooming section, leaving me with the job of choosing the right one. This was definitely uncharted territory. What criteria do you use to select a pregnancy test? Shape, size, the shade of blue? I did what any reasonable person would do-I chose the one with the nicest packaging. As I read the back of the kit I realized the process was pretty technical and there was a relative margin for error (this had a lot more to do with me than the test), so I picked up a spare one just in case.

Back at our hotel room with bladder at the ready (I hadn't been to the bathroom for hours) and test in hand, I made a beeline for the bathroom. I skimmed over the test instructions; I knew clear meant no baby and a blue line was a good indication the nine months ahead of us would be very different from the nine months just passed.

I broke open the packaging and got so confused I had to call Nick in to explain the process to me. After a few pointers I was ready to give it a go. However a slight miscalculation and bad aim (my hand-eye coordination has always been a little off) caused me to pee on my hand and down my leg, rendering the test completely unusable. Nick couldn't believe that, while man has developed computer technology that connects the world and unlocks the secrets of DNA, I could not get a simple home pregnancy test right.

Thank goodness I had anticipated the unpredictability of the female point-and-shoot and had had enough foresight to buy a spare. Though unsuccessful, the trial run had buoyed my confidence. I now knew that concentration and meticulous aim would bring success. Hooray, I hit the target! Now for the wait.

Only there was no wait! In about 0.0009 seconds a thin blue line appeared in the second window. I fumbled for the instructions. There it was: if both windows were blue, it was 99.9% certain I was pregnant.

Stunned, I stood staring at the thin blue line not saying a word. Nick, too, stared at the small tube dumbfounded, trying to comprehend what this little blue line really meant. A wave of incredible elation came over both of us, as did that feeling you get when you realize something just happened that will change your life forever.

We're having a baby!
