Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Beverly Hills: 90210 gets a fabulous face-lift for the Gossip Girl crowd in Zoey Dean's first sassy, sun-tanned installment of her Hollywood-centric The A-List.

Cover to cover with personalities you'll love (and love to loathe), Dean's West Coast adventure tells the tale of Anna Cabot Percy, a well-to-do New Yorker who heads to L.A. for an internship -- and learns about Tinsel Town the hard way. Out to revamp her good-girl image while she's there, Anna gets sloshed on the L.A.-bound plane and winds up meeting Princeton-going hunk Ben Birnbaum, who almost makes Anna a member of the Mile-High Club (thank goodness for federal regulations). Ben also asks Anna to celeb Jackson Sharpe's New Year's Eve wedding, and when Anna finds herself arm-in-arm with him before Hollywood's glitterati, she learns that being with Ben means fierce competition from Samantha Sharpe -- Jackson's label-loving, snappy daughter -- and her vicious friend, Cammie Sheppard. Over the course of a few days, Anna discovers plenty about these two vixens and even gets an unpleasant surprise from Ben himself, but with plenty of "new-and-improved Anna" defenses up her sleeve, this girl is set to be the next star on the A-List.

More deliciously sinful than the strudel at Spago and as marvelous as a Stella McCartney frock, Dean's A-List is a trashy treat that will keep you glued to your lounge. The sharp-tongued characters are definitely on a par with Cecily von Ziegesar's Gossip Girl, but their L.A. demeanor and knack for late-night partygoing will remind you that this brat pack is another, slightly groovier breed. If you're looking for feel-good California dreamin', you'd better take something first with this one. Shana Taylor

Publishers Weekly
This debut novel may be just the ticket for Gossip Girls fans. Perennial good girl Anna Percy ("Anna had yet to do one truly nasty thing") moves from New York City to her father's mansion in Los Angeles determined to reinvent herself. Things seem to be going well when the 17-year-old meets and makes out with handsome Princeton student Ben Birnbaum on the plane. Even better, he invites her to the New Years Eve wedding that night of a famous actor, Jackson Sharpe. But when her father fails to pick her up at the airport, Anna's new glamorous life takes a downward turn, made much worse when she meets Ben's nasty friends at the wedding. Covering a four-day period, the author cycles through various perspectives, from Anna to Ben's friends, including Jackson Sharpe's insecure daughter Sam, and Sam's friends, cruel Cammie and ditsy Dee, all of whom secretly attempt to land Ben for their own. Readers will likely be caught up in the glamorous world created here, full of fancy cars, decadent parties and designer clothes (Sam has designer's assistants "to help [her] with the selection process"). But, while Dean raises some intriguing plot points (Why did Ben abandon Anna on his father's yacht? Why is a former child prodigy now driving Anna's father's car? Will Anna's sister check herself out of rehab?), the audience may be frustrated by all the loose ends that point strongly to a sequel, if only by way of explanation. Ages 15-up. (Sept.) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
From The Critics
One phrase seems to describe the genre of this book: beach read. This is an ideal book for a teen girl to read on her spring-break trip. The light read and romantic drama keeps you turning the pages and eager to know who ends up with who and where. The story follows Anna Percy's relocation from her stuffy New York life as she travels to Los Angeles where her father lives. Anna is sick of doing exactly what is correct, so she has decided to be a little wild. During her first few days Anna meets quite the crowd from Beverly Hills. From the first day she winds up on the arm of a hot older boy at an Oscar wedding. After just a few days, Anna realizes that the L. A. life is a lot to handle. The main problem with this book is the lack of a resolution. Anna has some problems with her father that do not seem to ever get resolved. Most of the characters are not very well developed, but they are the kind of people that let you pretty much guess their type. The story is not strong or enlightening, but it is quite entertaining to pick up while sitting in the sun. 2003, 17th Street Productions/Alloy, Ages 12 up.

    Overrated

My friend suggested this book to me, and of course I read it. It absolutely sucked, and was very poor and overrated. Now my friend has been acting out of control, and I can totally see why. I suggest you read the books I have recommended.

This bookk is sooooo annoying. I hated it. I read the entire series because when I start something I have to finish it but I seriously couln't stand it. Like it starts up concepts like Sam might have a gay thing for Anna but then it suddenly disappers...not mentioned in any other books...the only one that I kinda liked was the last one California Dreaming? Because it was slightly believable.

    It's decent.

Being totally honest, this novel has many twists in it, but they can be over dramatic most of the time. For a story such as this one, which is meant to be a story which you can relate to at times, is hard to relate to. Everything is high class and elegant, and it seems like a normal teen drama television series. The book if fun to read at times, but it gets too dramatic to the point where you actually want to put it down sometimes.
But if you have free time and not much on your mind, I would recommend this book to you because it will keep you entertained since so much goes on in it.

    Just awful...

This book if filled with shallow, rich girls that live in California and just fight over boys, go to parties, etc. This book was not only boring it was just overall filled with snotty stuff. Please do not waste your time with such a supercilious and overrated book.

    You Are Who You Are

Summary: Anna Percy a seventeen year old prep school New Yorker is tired of living in the shadow of her best friend Cyn, so Anna decides to fly to Las Angeles and stay there with her dad for six months. Anna is ready to jump out of her sheltered life and become a different person in Las Angeles. On Anna's plane ride to L.A she meets a cute boy from Princeton, Ben Birnbaum. Ben invites Anna to Jackson Sharpe's wedding (a famous director) on New Years and Anna agrees to go with him. Anna's plane lands in L.A; she is so excited to see her father she has not seen him in years since her parents got divorced. Unfortunately, her father is not very reliable; he did not pick her up from the airport or meet her for lunch like he promised to. Anna goes to the wedding with Ben and meets his friends, Sam Dee, and Cammie, there. Sam, Dee, and Cammie all have a crush on Ben, so they are very jealous that Anna is on a date with Ben. The three girls do all they can to make this New Year's Eve the worst day of Anna's life, but Anna is not affected by their shenanigans and has a great night with Ben. Ben and Anna then leave the party to go have their own party on a yacht. The night was very romantic for the both of them, but Ben left early and left Anna stranded all alone on the yacht. Anna was very upset with him, so two days later when Ben tried to apologize to her Anna told him that he lost his chance with her and she never talked to Ben Birnbaum again. Major Messages/Themes: The major message or theme of The A-List is to be yourself, but to have confidence and strength within yourself. Anna wanted to go to Las Angeles to be reborn and not be the same old boring person, but when she goes to L.A she realizes she does not need to change who she is she just needs to be proud and confident about herself. In the past Anna would have forgiven Ben and given him a second chance, because she was afraid to express what she truly feels, but for the first time in her life she has the confidence and strength to tell Ben that he has lost his chance with her. Likes and Dislikes: the things I liked about, The A-List, are the overall theme of the book and the cliffhangers in the book. I personally love the theme of the book; it is an inspiring theme that makes the book seem so realistic. The book maybe fiction, but what happens in it is something that can happen in real life, which makes it easier to relate to. I also like how the author left some cliffhangers at the end of each chapter; they always made me want to read more. The only thing I dislike about The A-List is how the story ends; Dean (the author) ends the book by Anna walking away from Ben, but Dean does not tell how the rest of Anna's time went in L.A I found the end of the book almost frustrating, because I wanted to know what happened in the rest of the time Anna was in L.A. Why Someone Should Read This: I recommend The A-List by Zoey Dean to anyone who wants to read a romantic and mysterious book with a solid story line and theme. The book is packed with interesting dialogue and events that keeps the reader on their toes. This book is great, but is not for any readers under the age of 14, because it has many suggestive language and events. Overall Rating: My overall rating for The A-List by Zoey Dean is a seven. The book is filled with exciting twist and turns that I enjoyed, but the disappointing end was frustrating, so I had to give the book a mediocre score.

    An AMAZING book!

Okay, so i'm not typically a very fast reader or frequent reader. But when I picked up the A-list and started reading it, I literally could not stop reading it! It's really suspenseful from cover-to-cover, and it's really addicting as well. Fans of the Clique Series and Gossip Girl would absolutely love this book. So I totally recommend buying this book if you are thinking about it.

A Series You'll Learn To Love

You'll fall in love with your first time meeting the characters. Anna, the sophisticated girl from New York who goes to California to live with her dad and find adventure, Ben, the boy she meets on the plane and makes her wonder about love at first sight, Cammie, the hot bad girl of LA, Sam, her best friend who is insecure about her looks and daughter of Hollywood's favorite movie star, and Dee, the innocent girl who has some troubles.

The chapters showing the views and points of views of the different characters will be refreshing, and give you a new view on them.

    Simply Amazing! :)

WOW. These books were just amazing, who would've thought. I didn't, that's for sure. The cover of the 1st book didn't look that inviting but as soon as I started reading, I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN! It was just really refreshing to finally read something, that wasn't just about the same old high school love stories, I mean come on, ZzZzZzZ. These books had more than that. They had intrigue, glamour, & romance. You really get the essence of life in Hollywood! Trust me, once you read this 1st book, you'll want to rush to any bookstore to get the rest of the series! GREAATT SERIES, I definitely recommend it to girls 14-up.I'm definitely going to read the 2nd set of this series! :) ENJOY!

Almost as good as 'Gossip Girl'

This book was less dramatic than 'Gossip Girl', something I both loved and hated.
I'd write a review on all ten books in the series, but I have neither the time or memory to do so.
    Just a few comments:
    - Ben Birmbaum scared me when he got all posessive that one time
    - I loved 'Back in Black', especially the hypnosis scene
    - Anna Percy is the reincarnation of Sara Crewe in 'A Little Princess'
    - I would have felt bad for Cammie Shepard, but she is such a female dog to Anna and others, that frankly, I just don't
    - Sam Sharpe shouldn't feel insecure about her weight, but I guess that's inevitable. She shouldn't have cut off the engagement with Eduardo, either
    - Dee is perfect with Jack
    - I can't wait to read the 'Hollywood Royalty' series
