    A Treat For The Senses

Ah, the prose that poured from Henry Miller's pen...It is amazing to think that Miller could knock off such deep, rich conversations in ink on a regular basis. It was said that he kept up correspondence with several friends and often felt his letters were a lifeline and I could certainly see how they were for Nin, whose responses were often vapid or posed. Miller showed us the other side of the King - open and wonderfully vulnerable while still needing to be strong. Nin was the classic courtesan, fluttering about in costumes and rarely removing the artfully applied makeup that so enchanted her audience. There were times after reading a particularly moving bit of correspondence that I would pause and hug the opened book to my chest, hoping to somehow absorb the words, they were so beautifully written. Then I would have to remind myself that it was just a letter...
