A Little Deeper [Bonus Track] [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Lily Moayeri
With an inimitable rap style and self-esteem-affirming lyrics, 21-year-old Ms. Dynamite née Niomi McLean-Daley has been hailed as the British Lauryn Hill -- and for good reason. On her debut album, A Little Deeper, the 2002 winner of England's esteemed Mercury Music Prize shows clearly the influence of American hip-hop and R&B. For example, "Afraid 2 Fly" samples the whizzing string arrangement of Jay-Z's "More Money, More Cash, More Hoes." Most of the beats, however, are filtered through a very British street sound: a combination of U.K. garage, raga, and raw soul, bolstered by the production skills of Punch P. Diddy, Salaam Remi the Fugees, and Bloodshy and Avant ...

Diddy, Salaam Remi the Fugees, and Bloodshy and Avant Jennifer Lopez. But what sets Ms. Dynamite apart from many of her materialistic, sex-kittenish peers are her eloquent and incendiary lyrics. She addresses issues affecting young women, such as abusive relationships, pregnancy, and AIDS, notably on the Hill-esque single "It Takes More" and the drop-the-zero-and-get-a-hero message of "Put Him Out." Like fellow feisty rapstress Missy Elliott, Ms. Dynamite sings as well as she raps, and her nasal twang drops to a deeper note when she wants to hammer her point across, as on the Mary J. Blige–reminiscent, woeful relationship tale "Sick 'n' Tired," and "Watch Over Them," an a cappella prayer for the misguided youngsters in her North London neighborhood. As dark as they are thoughtful, Ms. Dynamite's explosive words stay with you long after the music is over.
Entertainment Weekly - David Browne
Her pinched, murmured singing style recalls that of Erykah Badu and Angie Stone; her combination of simmering groove and PC message is potent enough to make Lauryn Hill very nervous. [B+]
Billboard - Gail Mitchell
This U.K. garage dynamo-whose soulful rap-and-singing style invites comparisons to Lauryn Hill-stands a strong chance of nabbing that elusive brass ring: an American breakthrough for British rap.
