John Sutherland is one ambitious literary historian. In just 288 pages, the Professor Emeritus of Modern English Literature, University College London strove to write a compelled little history of all literature from The Epic of Gilgamesh to Harry Potter and even more recent graphic novels. And he achieved his goal. (Perhaps we should not be surprised: His Lives of the Novelists: A History of Fiction in 294 Lives earned praise as "a worthy successor to Dr. Johnson's Lives of the Poets.) In his new opus, Dr. Sutherland covers the groundwork without appearing to rush us along; he quite evidently enjoys his subject(s), generously peppering his narrative with telling insights and observations even as he waltzes us through the centuries. A charming holiday read indeed.
