Overview

Micah is in the midst of a mid-life crisis. His whole life seems to stretch out before him like a long highway: endless, monotonous, lonely. His job as a sportswriter used to give him such a buzz that he sacrificed his marriage to the long-suffering Alice. He has his friends, two children, tries to enjoy the mindless singles scene, but all the while he knows there is something missing.

A random act of violence forces him to reassess his entire existence, and Micah takes to the highway in earnest, searching for meaning and a signpost to point his life in the right direction once more.

Micah had it all and lost it: a great wife, two terrific kids, a fabulous job. Maybe he just took it for granted, or perhaps he never realized how many people envied him all he had, until he wakes up alone one day, and acknowledges that he has made the wrong decisions. Trying to get himself on the straight and narrow again is difficult, for though the highway of life which the author uses as a metaphor often seems straight, it has many unpredictable twists and turns. His relationship with Cora, his ex-wife Alice, and the down-to-earth, motherly Pearl, help redeem his lost paradise, though not without a price. Sorcha MacMurrough, Call Home the Heart

A powerful, evocative novel about a man on the brink. Micah is so ordinary, that this is his strength as a character: how many other thousands of Micahs are there out there, loving, losing, struggling to make sense of their lives. Or simply trying to force themselves to be content with whatever small blessings they have managed to wrest for themselves from an unforgiving society. Micah has the courage to admit his mistakes, to face tough decisions, to feel grief and misery, and yet still retain his humanity. The novel is a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit.
