Still working out of a renovated church in noir-est Denver, he gets a call from one of his ex-fiancees, Carol, a tough-talking attorney with plenty of intriguing curves. Overview

Streeter's back. Yeah, and his name's still just Streeter. Ex-linebacker, ex-bouncer, ex-husband - four times over - with a roving eye that never blinks. Still working out of a renovated church in noir-est Denver, he gets a call from one of his ex-fiancees, Carol, a tough-talking attorney with plenty of intriguing curves. Seems she's on the hit list of a former client whose specialty is killing from a distance and who blames her for his stint in jail. A dead cat, a live tarantula, and a string of bizarre murders are the ex-con's way of telling Carol that he's saving her for last. Against his better judgment, Streeter becomes Carol's chief protector and ends up tangling with a cast of offbeat no-gooders, lowlifes, and dames from the subtle and smoky to the flashy and vicious. Holed up with the ever-sassy and ever-seductive Carol in close quarters, Streeter finds his temperature - and his temper - rising. Confused and running out of time as Carol's name tops the hit list, Streeter discovers that the twists in this case are of a hairpin variety when it turns out that Carol may be playing - and losing - the dirtiest game of all.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Streeter, the Denver bounty hunter who first appeared in The Low End of Nowhere LJ 1/96, encounters a formidable enemy in the person of a known murderer released from prison on a technicality. The psychotic felon, Kevin Swallow, has vowed to kill all those connected with his imprisonment, including his lawyer-Streeter's ex-fiance. Swallow threatens, taunts, kills-all without police or Streeter finding him-until Streeter gets a lucky break or two and teams up with a p.i. involved in the original Swallow case. Authentic action, in-depth characterization, and a nerve-wracking, cat-and-mouse plot make this a winner.
Kirkus Reviews
Carol Irwin's afraid of Kevin Swallow. Even though she did her best to clear him of a double homicide, and he ended up walking on a technicality, he blames her for the time he spent in jail—as she tells her ex-fiancé Streeter, prince of Denver skip- tracers—and now that Swallow's out again he's going to kill her. And killing her isn't enough: Swallow's taunting her by sending her doggerel notes accompanied by a tarantula and a dead cat—something to think about as she reads the newspaper stories about what's become of the other law-enforcement types Swallow holds responsible for his prison stint (victims who, even though Swallow's threats were practically front-page news, never seem to have watched their own backs). How can Streeter (The Low End of Nowhere, 1996) say no to an old flame, especially one who remained a pal even after he broke up their wedding plans by bedding her best friend? So he goes on the job against Swallow, grudgingly opens his home to Carol—and gradually begins to pick up false notes (her quirky behavior, an unsettling anecdote starring herself and a garbage disposal) that make him wonder if this case is really as simple as it seems.

It isn't, not by a long shot, even though Stone's twists actually rob his fast, sleek tale of tension; the ingenious finale, featuring a kidnapping, three pairs of handcuffs, a hand grenade, and a thoroughly exasperated mime, could have used a jolt of adrenaline from the opening pages.
