Overview

Moved by the desire for adventure and a yearning to help the Ute Indians, twenty-year-old Shiloh Wainright impulsively accepts a teaching position at the White River Indian Agency in northwestern Colorado. The new job, however, isn't what she imagined it would be, and Shiloh soon finds herself caught in the cross fire between the Utes, their unyielding Indian Agent, and the unrealistic demands of the US government. Her unexpected encounter with Jesse Blackwater, an embittered half-breed Ute and childhood friend, only complicates matters as they battle their growing feelings for each other amidst the spiraling tensions threatening to explode into a catastrophic Indian uprising.

Set amongst the wilds of the Colorado Rockies in 1879, this is a tale of a forbidden love and a faith tested in the cauldron of intolerance and the harsh realities of life on the untamed frontier. Bestselling author Kathleen Morgan deftly explores themes of mercy, fidelity to one's beliefs despite what others think or do, and compassion for those different from oneself as she plumbs the depths of the human heart and the healing power of God's love.

Prolific Christian writer, Kathleen Morgan continues her Heart of the Rockies series with a book that transcends race and politics. A Love Forbidden not only takes on an inter-racial relationship but also the political turmoil and treatment of the American Indian tribes in the late 1870's. Morgan's attention to detail and warm, believable characters make this a stand out in the Christian fiction market. The theme is refreshing and original and portrays the struggle of the Ute people in a light some readers have never experienced. In my experience it has been rare when an author shows these troubling times in an authentic and believable light. Morgan shows the plight of the Indian nations in stark focus in this book and she doesn't favor the government. What happened to the Native American people was a travesty and I believe it should be portrayed that way and obviously Morgan agrees with me. One of the things that I really enjoyed about this book, was the honesty in which it was written. Morgan doesn't shy away from hard subjects like racial interaction and domestic violence. She looks those issues in the eye and tells the reader like it is. I like that kind of fearlessness in an author. It's hard to find in Christian fiction. Shiloh is a really strong character. It takes a lot of courage to give up what you know for the unknown and that's exactly what this character does. She leaves her home and the comparative safety of what she is used to, to go to a place steeped in danger for one reason. She wants to make a difference. She is compassionate and understanding and she also has a deep faith. She trusts God to take care of her in this place and in this situation. I think Morgan got that message across in a subtle but believable manner. She doesn't hit the reader over the head with it, but weaves it into the fabric of the story. Jesse was also a very well written and engaging character. Being of mixed race, Jesse's struggles are monumental, especially during this time period. The prejudices that we know now are hardly comparable to what someone in Jesse's situation probably faced. I liked the fact that Morgan did make Jesse bitter or dark. He accepted his situation and made the best of it. He was resourceful and understanding. And sees the great danger that Shiloh has placed herself in. I liked his protective spirit and his love. The relationship is fraught with problems from the beginning. But isn't something worth having worth fighting for? A great love story! There are many themes in this book, including forgiveness and each character struggles with this in one way or another. Morgan really showed restraint by not letting the secondary characters lead the book. This book focuses on the main couple to a great extent. The supporting cast is there and helps to move the plot, but they do not take over the story. The plot itself is such a driving force that isn't needed. This is a wonderfully written series that I believe Christian fiction readers and historical fiction enthusiasts will both embrace and fall in love with. The Characters are well drawn, the plot is action packed and relevant and the romantic aspects of the story are not cut and dried. Though readers kind of know what's going to happen with Shiloh and Jesse they will still be on the edge of their seats. Morgan makes you think she make take a different direction, even when readers know in there hearts she won't. That was the key to a great book in this case.

After reading several books by Kathleen Morgan I was glad to find this series, I like the way the author brings these characters to life & the moral values & truths she portrays through them. Forgiveness is of great importance through this particular novel & keeps you on your toes to know the outcome. Love it!!

I liked the part where Shiloh went home to see her sister after she had been beaten.

I really enjoyed "A Love Forbidden". Loved the story of Shiloh Wainwright and Jesse Blackwater (a man of half-Ute blood). Shiloh wants to be friends with Jesse, but finds it difficult because of what he's experienced in the past. Jesse wants the same thing, but feels he can't allow it for the same reason. Together, they face many uncertain obstacles, finding that they are inadvertently being drawn together in a tension filled romance so strong, it rivals the tension between the Ute People and the US Government. And I love the fact that this story is based on an actual historical event. This book gets two thumbs up from me!

The cover on this book pulled me in, but it took me awhile to get into the story. The setting of the book is in beautiful Colorado in the late 1870's, and we get to travel through this area with the characters. Jesse Blackwater and Shiloh Wainwright end up in the same Indian Village, when Shiloh tries to take a job there as a teacher. What a hard life poor Jesse has had and he really touched me....things that should never go on in a child's life, happened to him. You can feel the sparks fly between the two, but Jesse or Nuaru has lost site of the God he accepted in his youth. I can see God's hand in putting Shiloh and Jesse back into ones lives in the Ute's Village. We follow the Goverment plan to move these people off their land and onto a Reservation. Of course, there is resistance...I tried to think how I would feel with someone coming in and taking my land?? You will wonder how all of this is going to come out, and if they will survive to marry?? Also will both come to terms with Forgiveness? This is a reality read, things that happened mixed in with a different type of Love story. Enjoy! I received this book from the Publisher Revell, and was not required to give a positive review.

Kathleen Morgan is a superbly talented Christian author. I read A Heart Divided some time back, the first book in the Heart Of The Rockies series, and I knew then that I would have to read all the books in this series. Ms. Morgan takes factual historical elements and blends them with richly created, complex plot lines, tosses in sweet, lovable characters and gives her fans a book that will instantly grab your heart and keep you hanging on until the last page. Shiloh Wainwright is a sweet and loving character! She accepts a job to be a teacher at the White River Indian Agency, but once there, things aren't what they seem and her life is about to change. But, it may not be for the better, as she's placed herself in the middle of a battle between the white and the Ute Indians. What's more is, she's face to face with a friend from her past...one who she never forgot, nor does she want to forget. Jesse Blackwater was Shiloh's friend when he lived and worked on their ranch. But, he realized along time ago that the Whites and the Indians wouldn't get along so he left. Now, he's face to face with the beautiful young Shiloh Wainwright, his only white friend from his childhood. Can he move past the past and make a future with the beautiful young white woman? Or will the battle last forever and leave him alone and fighting for his people? This is an amazing story of loyalty, faith, forgiveness and trust. This 5 Book worthy addition to Ms. Morgan's work is stunningly beautiful as it follows the differences and problems among two very different kinds of people. It also shows the power that believing and trusting in God has over any outcome, and that if you follow your heart and listen to the Creator, you can overcome any thing and find love along the way. I am anxiously awaiting the next installment! Great job, Ms. Morgan!
