Overview

In this updated, revised eBook version of Bettye Griffin’s classic novel originally published in 1999…

Ava Maxwell has made a career out of helping other people with their dreams as the leading wedding planner in the trendy but troubled city of Palmdale, Florida. She cherishes the idea of young couples beginning married life and eventually starting a family…knowing that for her, the reality was painfully different.

Ten years before Ava walked out on her marriage when she and her ex-husband received the devastating news that she would never be able to have children…the one thing her ex wanted most. The intervening years have been marked by aborted relationships and by clinging to the belief that she will finally be able to claim happiness once she reaches the point in her life where she would not be expected to bear children…but she’s only thirty-five years old and lonely, and ‘that certain age’ is still a good ten years away.

Then, in the same remarkable evening, Ava encounters both an eight-year-old purse snatcher and an exciting new man in town. Alliances are formed, bonds that soon deepen into something more special than she’s ever known. Could these two males be the key to her attaining…A Love of Her Own?

Meet the Author

Bettye Griffin was told by her English professor that she had a gift for writing and might want to consider pursuing writing as a professional career. She promptly dropped out of college and started crafting stories...and just 22 short years later sold her first book. Bettye writes both contemporary romance and women's fiction. A native of Yonkers, New York, Bettye has also lived in Florida and Illinois, and now crafts her compelling, drama-filled tales from her home in the great dairy state of Wisconsin. Bettye thoroughly enjoys Wisconsin's contributions to the American diet and often nibbles on cheese while writing, and she celebrates a good day of writing by having a glass of the beer that made Milwaukee famous.

Since 1998, Bettye has written 6 novels of women's fiction, including Once Upon A Project (2008) and A New Kind of Bliss (2009); and 11 contemporary romances, including A Love For All Seasons (2007) and A Love of Her Own (1999). In 2009, seeing the creative and financial freedom of publishing independent projects, Bettye started her own imprint, Bunderful Books, and to date has published three contemporary romances through this outlet, Save The Best For Last (2009), The Heat of Heat (2010), and a re-release of her traditionally published novel A Love of Her Own (2011). Ava has a wedding shop and plans weddings. She can not have children and is extremely bothered by this. That was the cause of the end of her first marriage. Ava is so bothered by knowing she can't have children that she lets it affect every relationship she has. I didn't like how Ava went for over ten years feeling that she was a failure because she was infertile. When she meets Hilton, her life turns around when she finds out that he can accept adopting children.

Hilton was a wonderful character who was attracted to Ava immediately. He had a son, Max, who he was trying to see more often.  Max lived with his mother, Janelle, who wouldn't marry Hilton but wanted his support checks. Hilton was very comfortable with his son and terrific with Marcus. Ava "found" Marcus when he was stealing a purse and she became his friend and started to have him stay at her house often.

I like the writing style of the author and thought the book was a great read and definitely captures the reader in the story line. It is very thought provoking dealing with infertility and adoption.  I really had never thought about how people felt when they had these problems to overcome.

The problem I had with A Love Of Her Own was that the author didn't indicate that the characters were African American.  I was at about 20% through on my ereader when I finally figured this out. The character description was really good.  I found the children wonderful little guys.  Even though Ava was pretty negative about her fertility problem, she was a good, kind person and I liked her.  Hilton was terrific.

    Surprised!

This book threw me off. When I purchased this on ebook I expected a quick paced read. But instead I was surprised at how the story plot of the main female and male character dragged along. Over 600 plus pages. I began to actually dread picking up my nook to finish this story line. This book was definitely not reflective of the story lines I have read in the past. The subject matter infertility and adoption are two very important topics that touch the life of many. But these topics as they were addressed in a romance novel left be feeling sad and wondering about the final intent.

    Heartwarming

A heart warming story about infertility and how it doesn't have to be the end of a woman's life. I loved this book because it showed how people can look at you differently if you can not bear children. It was a nonstop read.
