Overview

Like his '60s brothers in song Otis Redding and Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett defined the grittier side of soul with original fervor and timeless grace. The double-CD set A MAN AND A HALF: THE BEST OF WILSON PICKETT completely chronicles "'Wicked"' Pickett's groundbreaking genius. Disc 1 consists of the essential Pickett experience, with songs like "Midnight Hour," "Funky Broadway," "Land of 1,000 Dances," and "634-5789-Soulsville USA" showcasing his earthy growls and carnal cries and the driving horns and explosive rhythm section that make these Atlantic recordings true classics. Disc 2 is a hodgepodge of cover-heavy hits that show Pickett as a tamer, more versatile vocalist. Hearing Pickett's soul-howl stamp on hits made famous by the Supremes, the Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix is not only a treat to the ears, it's a testament to his amazing prowess as a vocalist.

A Man and a Half: The Best of Wilson Pickett is a double-disc set that collects the absolute cream of Pickett's early sides with The Falcons and all the highlights of his successful alliance with the Atlantic label. With "Mustang Sally," "In the Midnight Hour," "Ninety Nine & a Half," "Hey Jude," "Land of 1000 Dances," "You're So Fine," and "634-5789" all included, this excellent compilation should be one of the cornerstones of anybody's soul collection.
