A Tallgrass Novel

A MAN TO HOLD ON TO

Therese Matheson doesn't know if she'll ever get over losing her husband in Afghanistan. Surviving Paul's death has been hard, but raising his sullen son and his thirteen-going-on-thirty daughter alone has been even harder. All they need is a fresh start, and Tallgrass, Oklahoma, could be the perfect new beginning . . . especially when Therese meets Sergeant Keegan Logan. The sexy combat medic and single dad soon awakens a desire she'd thought long buried.

Keegan always wanted to be a father . . . someday. So when his ex-girlfriend disappears, leaving her daughter in his care, Keegan's hands are tied. He has to find the girl's father. His search leads him to Tallgrass and to a beautiful brunette widow who has no idea her husband was ever unfaithful. What begins as a friendship soon ignites into something far more and gives him the courage to be the kind of man-and father-he always dreamt he could be. But his secret still stands between them. Can Keegan reveal the truth and convince Therese they share something too special to lose-a love that can bring two families together?

Pappano makes a powerful and welcome return to the small town of Tallgrass, Okla., with her second novel about military widows and widowers (after A Hero to Come Home To). Therese Matheson’s beloved husband, Paul, died overseas, leaving her to raise Abby and Jacob, his unhappy, resentful teen children from a previous marriage. Unbeknownst to them, Paul was also the father of adorable toddler Mariah by another woman, who left Mariah in the care of her ex-boyfriend, Army medic Keegan Logan. Keegan travels from Louisiana to Tallgrass, hoping to leave Mariah with her real father. Instead, he finds Therese struggling to keep her grief-stricken blended family together. As Keegan and Therese fall in love, Mariah enchants her half-siblings, leaving Keegan—who has told them only that he was looking for Paul, but not why—wondering how and whether to reveal the truth and tarnish the Mathesons’ cherished memories of Paul. Pappano excels at depicting deep emotion without resorting to melodrama, including plenty of humor and the seeds of future Tallgrass romances to balance Therese’s sorrows and Keegan’s inner turmoil. Agent: Melissa Jeglinski, Knight Agency. (Feb.)

Reviewed by Anne Boling for Readers' Favorite A Man To Hold On To (A Tallgrass Novel) by Marilyn Pappano is an entertaining romance. My copy is audio format read by Loretta Rawlins. Keegan Logan’s former girlfriend, Sabrina, had an affair with Paul Matheson which resulted in a child, Mariah. She put Keegan’s name on the birth certificate, naming him as the father. When Sabrina abandoned her three-year-old daughter, Keegan grudgingly became her guardian. Keegan was determined to find Paul Matheson and insist he take custody of Mariah. Therese Matheson had been raising her stepchildren, thirteen-year-old Abby and eleven-year-old Jacob, since her husband’s death in Afghanistan three years ago. Abby was resentful and Jacob was sullen. Things had gotten so bad that Therese had considered surrendering custody of them. However, a knock on the door changed the lives of everyone.  A Man To Hold On To will make a great beach read. The characters were endearing. It was fun watching Keegan and Therese fall in love. However, Mariah quickly became my favorite character. The child was lovable, she brought out the best in Abby. The child’s relationship with Keegan was at times humorous; it was a pleasure to watch as Keegan came to love the little girl. Of course my favorite scene was when Therese stood up to her stepchildren’s mother. Author Marilyn Pappano successfully captured and demonstrated the pain and grief that Abby and Jacob experienced. There were several secondary plots that set the stage for the next book in this series. This is a fast and pleasurable read. A Man To Hold On To is the second book in the Tallgrass series. Kudos to the author, Marilyn Pappano.

A Man To Hold On to by Marilyn Pappano is a story that will touch your heart like no other.    Therese Matheson is barely hanging on to her sanity. Besides losing her husband in Afghanistan she is raising his children from his first marriage. His son and daughter are both having a hard time adjusting to their father being gone. Their mother would never win a mother of the year award.  Therese is at the end of her rope when a stranger comes into their lives.   Sergeant Keegan Logan has had fatherhood thrust on him by his ex girlfriend. Turns out little Mariah isn’t even Keegan’s child. He goes in search of the birth father after his ex dumps the child in his care. Keegan’s search takes him to the home of Therese Matheson. He can’t bring it to further upset the lovely young widow. Keegan decides to stay awhile and get to know the family before he makes a decision.   Spending so much time with Keegan makes Therese realize how much she misses having a partner in her life. Their relationship grows stronger every day but Keegan hasn’t told Therese the real reason he sought her late husband. Will this devastating news destroy a new found love?   This book is so moving and will stay in your heart long after you turn the last page. I knew when we met Therese in A Hero to Come Home to that her journey would not be an easy one to travel.  It was well worth it waiting for Therese’s story to be told.  Eager to get the next book in this wonder series.

I have been waiting since June for this book.  Second in the Tallgrass series and I loved it as much as first HERO TO COME HOME TO. This author does not disappoint.
